My audio stops working after Windows 7 has been running for a while;

Ideas:

  • the audio will work again after a re-boot but again, it will stop working after Windows has been running for a while. Re-bootig always fixes the problem but only for a few hours and then the audio is gone. audio problem

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft answers forum.

You can check for the sound drivers, whether they are installed correctly.

if not uninstall them and install again.

I suggest you to verify that the default sound device is set correctly

  1. Click Start, type Sound in the Start Search box.
  2. Click Sound in the search results at the top of the Start menu.
  3. Click the Playback tab. Notice the check mark next to the default device. For most users, the default device is Speakers.

Make sure that your audio settings are configured as expected. Follow these steps:

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, and make sure that the Default Format is set to the value that you expect.

When you finish, close this window to return to the previous window.

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Configure, and then make sure the configurations are set correctly.
  2. If the sound settings are set correctly, you are using speakers as the sound device, and your speakers are already set as the default device, go to method 5 now.
  3. Select the sound device that you want as the default sound device, and then click Set Default.
  4. Click OK to save your settings and to close the Sound dialog box.

Determine whether you can now hear sound. If you can hear sound, the issue is resolved. If you cannot hear sound, try method 5.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948481

you can also check performing clean boot.

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Vista, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  4. Click OK.

When you are prompted, click Restart.

After the computer starts, start the  program and check whether the problem is resolved.

I have the same problem, sound stops working after a while, usually after a program has finished playing any sort of multi-media. When I go to play another music track using any software, it won't play. If I try to play video, the sound won't work. Moreover, sites that require Flash won't load content.

When I reboot it takes much too long to shut down, sometimes more than 20 minutes. I think that shut down is slowed because the log off sound won't play, but I'm not sure.

I have an Asus cm5570 PC that is running windows 7 64-bit. I have already updated all of the audio and video drivers at Asus's  and Pentium's websites.

    Please help!!!!

I was able to stop the "audio from disappearing and a reboot fixes it" problem by uninstalling both QuickTime and Microsoft Security Essentials. Have yet to determine which one caused it to happen - am now testing that... starting last night. Could take a while.

If you can remember about when it started you can look at the reliability history and see what programs/updates were installed around that time. For me it was QT and MSE. There were a few others that I tested which had no effect on the problem.

    Windows 7 64bit

    UPDATE 8 hours later

Sound disappeared while watching flash video on hulu. Error logs for about same time the audio disappeared were:

Application or service 'Apple Mobile Device' could not be restarted.

A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Apple Mobile Device service to connect.

The Apple Mobile Device service failed to start due to the following error:The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

The maximum file size for session "ReadyBoot" has been reached. As a result, events might be lost (not logged) to file "C:\Windows\Prefetch\ReadyBoot\ReadyBoot.etl". The maximum files size is currently set to 62914560 bytes.

Session "ReadyBoot" stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188

I have once more uninstalled quicktime and itunes [which I installed this time] but left MSE installed. Just over 24 hours exactly since QT & itunes were installed and the problem appears. MSE was earlier in the day so no correlation. Coincidence? Looks as if by this time tomorrow if the audio does not disappear then this is the culprit.

    UPDATE

No audio disappearing with Quicktime/itunes uninstalled and MSE installed. So that's it. Somehow, even just installed and not being used, QT messes with the audio.

I'm having the same problem as well and I'm at my wits end with this.  Audio randomly dies either from the computer being on for several hours, waking it from sleep mode, or muting/unmuting multiple times.  When the audio dies, any wmv I watch in Windows Media Player also plays in SLOW MOTION.  A reboot is the only thing that fixes this.  I'm running Windows 7 64 bit with an M-Audio Audiophile card with the latest drivers installed.  I really hope someone comes up with a solution for this soon because I feel like SMASHING MY COMPUTER every time this happens.
