My audio stops working after Windows 7 has been running for a while;

Ideas:

  • the audio will work again after a re-boot but again, it will stop working after Windows has been running for a while. Re-bootig always fixes the problem but only for a few hours and then the audio is gone. audio problem

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft answers forum.

You can check for the sound drivers, whether they are installed correctly.

if not uninstall them and install again.

I suggest you to verify that the default sound device is set correctly

  1. Click Start, type Sound in the Start Search box.
  2. Click Sound in the search results at the top of the Start menu.
  3. Click the Playback tab. Notice the check mark next to the default device. For most users, the default device is Speakers.

Make sure that your audio settings are configured as expected. Follow these steps:

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Properties, click the Advanced tab, and make sure that the Default Format is set to the value that you expect.

When you finish, close this window to return to the previous window.

  1. On the Playback tab, select the playback device, click Configure, and then make sure the configurations are set correctly.
  2. If the sound settings are set correctly, you are using speakers as the sound device, and your speakers are already set as the default device, go to method 5 now.
  3. Select the sound device that you want as the default sound device, and then click Set Default.
  4. Click OK to save your settings and to close the Sound dialog box.

Determine whether you can now hear sound. If you can hear sound, the issue is resolved. If you cannot hear sound, try method 5.

you can also check performing clean boot.

To perform a clean boot on a computer that is running Windows Vista, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

  1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
  3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  4. Click OK.

When you are prompted, click Restart.

After the computer starts, start the  program and check whether the problem is resolved.

    I have the same problem:

After some hours the sound repeats itself and after closing either windows mediaplayer or youtube the sounds stops completety and it doesn't come back untill a reboot.

    I tried using this:

There is actually a very easy way to fix this problem ..

You need to restart the "Windows Audio" service, and all comes back fine.

I made a one-liner shortcut on my desktop (with powershell) to do this.

    %SystemRoot%\system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe -Command "Restart-Service AudioSrv"

But when i do, Powershell says:

Restart-Service : Service 'Windows Audio (AudioSrv)' cannot be stopped due to the following error: can't open Srv on the computer .

    At line:1 char:16

    • Restart-Service <<<<  AudioSrv
    • CategoryInfo          : CloseError: (System.ServiceProcess.ServiceController:ServiceController)

    ], ServiceCommandException

    • FullyQualifiedErrorId : CouldNotStopService,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.RestartServiceCommand

Same issues here. In fact, a simple Google of “Windows 7 audio stops”will show that this is a widespread and very real issue, although calling it an “epidemic” might be a bit extreme.

As for me, 64-bit Win 7 Home Premium, Line 6 GuitarPort, everything with current drivers. Using the built-in RealTek excuse for a sound card for many months (November to April) I had no issues whatsoever, but using the GuitarPort (a USB audio device) I could get maybe four days of audio, whether or not I disabled the onboard sound in BIOS. All drivers are current. The GP works flawlessly on my old XP system, and fine on this system running an old 64-bit Ubuntu. It is not a hardware issue.

Stopping and restarting the audio service does not work, whether through the Management Console or a NET command (hey, you never know). All the standard indications that there is an issue fail to alert me – as far as the system is concerned, there is no problem, regardless of the actual facts (although the Device Manager hangs when I try to disable the device). Setting the audio service to automagically restart on failure does not work. Did I mention that all drivers are current?

KB 2484031, “A USB audio device stops playing audio in Windows 7” seemed relevant, especially since my system hangs a while before rebooting after dropping audio, but there is no applicable hotfix. I applied the recommended updated KB hotfix, 2529073, but that was disastrous – I have to close out of whatever audio app I’m using (WinAmp for music, VLC Media Player – both of which, like my drivers, are current) to get any sound at all, and it takes a good ten seconds before the audio starts. Worse yet, my three or four days of usable audio has now turned into three or four hours. Ah well; I was wondering why “Binary files in some USB drivers are not updated after you install Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1” would have anything to do with “A USB audio device stops playing audio in Windows 7.”

In summary: This is not a hardware issue (the hardware works fine outside of Windows 7). Nor is it a driver issue (unless you want us to believe a conspiracy among the makers of USB audio devices). It is an OS issue. Many people have the same issue, and we’re not as silent as our devices.
