How do I copy home movies on a DVD to my computer?

Home made (non-copy protected) DVDs are easy...

just insert the DVD in your DVD drive...go to...Start /

Computer...right click the icon for the DVD Drive and

choose Explore...you should see the directory of the DVD.

Now...copy/paste or drag/drop...the 'VIDEO_TS' folder

from the DVD to a new folder (renamed to the name of

the corresponding DVD) on your hard drive and that's it.

If you had VLC Media Player on your system (for example)

you could right click the VIDEO_TS folder and choose...

"Play With VLC Media Player" and the video will play.

These files can be several Gigabytes so copying can take

some time...have patience.

    All this talk and still no answer.

    First, who in the world copies home made movies to the PC??? I can't even think of a camera that records movies to a CD or DVD.  Everything is on flash memory now.

    The question is How Do You Copy and DVD movie (like the ones you buy at the store), a regular DVD movie NOT HOME MADE DVD.   This is the real question.

    Most new laptops don't come with the DVD player anymore so watching a movie while traveling is no longer an option.  Thus need to copy the move from DVD (NOT HOME MADE) to the PC hard drive for later viewing.

    Eleanor, Hi... What type of DVD disc is it (DVD + or - R or RW )and how was it created? When you load the disc and go to the drive (as you did before) what does the pie-chart look like when you click on properties? (all blue - all pink or some of both)

    Sadly, when I right click on the drive name, no "Explore" option appeared. I did try "Copy" but nothing happened. So I have to report that as of August 2015 this was not helpful.

    How about copy ad regular movie (store bought movie) from a dvd to laptop or hard drive? We travel a lot and new laptop does not have the DVD drive in it so can't watch any movies anymore, really sucks.
