How do I copy home movies on a DVD to my computer?

Home made (non-copy protected) DVDs are easy...

just insert the DVD in your DVD drive...go to...Start /

Computer...right click the icon for the DVD Drive and

choose Explore...you should see the directory of the DVD.

Now...copy/paste or drag/drop...the 'VIDEO_TS' folder

from the DVD to a new folder (renamed to the name of

the corresponding DVD) on your hard drive and that's it.

If you had VLC Media Player on your system (for example)

you could right click the VIDEO_TS folder and choose...

"Play With VLC Media Player" and the video will play.

These files can be several Gigabytes so copying can take

some time...have patience.

    Okay people.  Just to make it clear, I don't care for home made DVD's.  I got a laptop that does not have a DVD player but we like to watch movies (not home made, seriously, who does that on the trip) while driving, like Disney and stuff, I guess these would be called commercial DVD's.  How do I copy those to the PC or off DVD so I can move them to my DVD-less laptop for later viewing???

    Also, the kids keep cracking and scratching the DVD's so need a way to back them up.

    you lost me on the second paragraph; I don't know how to copy/paste or drag n' drop to a new folder on my hard drive.  I tried opening a folder but that's as far as I got.  I just have one DVD I put in my computer and would like to copy it to the computer.  It is a music video, "Guns n' Roses" Welcome to the Videos.  Eventually would like to get it over to my iPhone.  Can you help more specifically?  Thank you.
