WINDOWS 7 error The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

I am getting the error "

"WINDOWS 7 error The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log or use the command line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail." for every application that i try to launch.

Please help with a fix.

Error message: "Side-by-side configuration is incorrect"

The machine is missing the correct C++ runtime components for your type of system. (x86 or x64).

Installing the following update resolved the issue.

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

I'm running Windows Vista SP 2 on my laptop. The discussed error

The application has failed to start because the side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log

This appeared in an error window titled Explorer.EXE with the above message.

It suddenly appeared when I tried to open Windows Live Mail 2011. I have never had a problem until today and being the geek that I am, I've never seen this. I installed as instructed the following update: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) This fixed my problem and Windows Live Mail 2011 is now functioning properly.

So I was recently trying to run the Company Of Heroes World Builder. I received this error.

After some research and seeing this thread, it dawned on me...

Every application that relies on the redistributable packages may require a specific version of the C++ runtime.

In this instance, which I would guess is like most instances, the correct distributable package is "distributed" with the software in question.

For the COH World Builder, when installed using Steam, you can find the package in:

Steam\steamapps\common\company of heroes\VCRedist

This is actually a version from 2005.

If you are trying to run a different app, the folder may be different. You may need to pull the install media and find it there. Finally, you can probably find the correct distributable on the application's website. You just need to do some digging.
