Updates to Silverlight won't install and can't uninstall

tried updating critical update to silverlight kb97202

over 30 times won't install

kb974331 didn't either 28 times

uninstall silerlight failed 3 times

"This patch could not be opened. Verify that the patch exists and that you can access it, or contact the applications vendor to verify that this is a genuine Windows Installer patch package."

was referred to registry cleaner ;-(

    Hi.  I was unable to add attachments to my hotmail, and learned it was probably a problem with silverlight.  I was, like many, unable to remove it from my computer..Getting an error message about a patch path or whatever.  I followed your steps and the program was removed from the add or remove programs page, as well as from the registry when I went in manually.  Thank you. But, the silverlight site was still saying the program was installed on my computer.

        However, when I tried to delete the folder it said the applications were in use.  I was still unable to install the new program.  But...I went into the start menu and deleted the silverlight tabs under all programs, then when I went back into program files it allowed me to delete the folder.  I then installed the new silverlight, and I now can use attachments!

        Thank you for the advice...and I just wanted to add the part about deleting all remnants of the program off my start-programs tab, for those people who may still be having trouble.

    Thank you for the help, Anthony.  This problem had been frustrating me for the last 12 months, and I have been bad-mouthing Microsoft that entire time.
