No sound via HDMI output when connecting laptop to TV

Original title: HDMI Laptop to TV - No Sound

Up until a few weeks ago it worked well: I simply connected the HDMI cable between my laptop and TV and got both the audio and video on the TV (After selecting the right AV channel on the TV). Now I only get the video.

I have looked through other questions on this forum but have not found anything that works. I am reluctant to change too much, as it worked before.

In my "Playback Devices" I see two devices: "Speakers" (Default) and "SPDIF Interface".

Laptop: Packard Bell Easy Note TJ65 Pentium Dual-Core CPU

Windows 7 Version 6.1 (Build 7600)

TV: Panasonic Plasma TX-PS42S10B (HD Ready)

Any ideas, anybody? I feel that as I have made very few changes, the fix must be simple. I haven't tried a different cable yet, but I'm pretty sure it's OK.

(So I had to go on to JustAnswers.com & pay £28, but I got the answer straight away ... wish I had gone earlier!)

Happy to share, though, for anyone struggling with this annoying problem...

I went on to Device Manager (Start Button > right click on Computer and selectManage) and uninstalled the device calledIntel(R) High Definition Audio HDMI. Restarted the computer. Connected TV with HDMI cable. Right clicked on the little speaker symbol & slected Playback Devices. Panasonic TV shows as a device. Right clicked on it & set as default. I got my sound back & everything works fine.

It seems the driver had been updated somewhere along the line and was no longer compatible. Following this process makes the computer put back its own driver. All this time I was looking for a newer driver, and what it wanted was the old one!

For the record, the device in Device Manager is now called High Definition Audio Device. No mention of HDMI!

By the way, if you right click on the desktop you get a wizard to set up the TV interface.

The problem is that I only see two devices: "Speakers" (Default) and "SPDIF Interface".

I guess if you have XP you might not be able to walk me any further! Thanks for your support anyway.

Aha iTunes .... Don't let it take over your PC !

Don't give in, don't re-install W7, thats the looser's way out ;-)))

Go rather to the manufacturer's website (PC, laptop, motherboard, sound device etc) and update. MS is not always up to date.

My memory is failing after a few glasses of Rosé, but isn't there a setting somewhere in Control Panel regarding HDMI ?

I know if I want to do what you wish to do, I have to take a lead from my sound device (can't its Firewire) to a special socket on my video card (nVidia 260GTX) and then use HDMI out to a tele. Bloody complicated if you ask me.

OK, seriously, you've changed something/installed something -"Up until a few weeks ago it worked well" - your words. SO the question has to be : What ?

That's why I use ATI cards. They have an HDMI audio chipset embedded in the graphic card. No need for extra cables.

Guys:

The 's' was a typo. Sorry! There was definitely only ONE lead. And I definitely had audio. 100% sure. As I said at the start of this thread it wasreally simple. Turn on the TV. Set it to HDMI. Plug in the HDMI lead at both ends, and both the video & audio appeared automatically on the TV. This is the way I play my i-Tunes.

Carlos, following your earlier advice, in Device Manager I found "Intel(R) High definition Audio HDMI" (a good sign?). No question marks or anything. It says it is 'working properly'. I tried to update the driver, but it came back an said it was up to date. Everything seems normal. Any ideas?

I guess reinstalling Windows 7 might do it, but I was hoping for something less radical and time consuming.

That's a good sign. Once you plug your single HDMI cable to the TV set, go to Control Panel, Sound Devices and see if you can set it as the default one. I'm now at XP 32-bit Spanish so I can't walk you through the exact process but I think you'll find the way.
