Is there a way to shutdown windows 7 without being forced to install the updates? There are plenty of times when updates are ready but i want the computer off and ready to move. I hate having to wait for updates when i don't even tell it to do them.

I hear that the shutdown option you desire was requested during the beta of Windows 7 but the request apparently went unheard.

Sorry but, about the only thing I can suggest is to change Windows Updates' settings to allow you when to decide to download and install the updates when you have the appropriate amount of time to do so. My Win 7 system is set to that option so I can't say what the Download updates but let me choose whether to install them option will give you another shutdown option that does not install updates.

Oversight my eye.

Micrososft always put out updates without checking they work. They can't afford for too many people to be able to not install their updates because they know we will all turn updates off and wait 6 months for them to fix the bugs in the updates they threw together to fix the bugs!!

Easy.

Start >Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Update.

Then, click the link for optional and recommended updates.

On the following screen where you can select the updates you want to install, highlight the first one on the list, then hold the shift key while highlighting the last update in the list.

Right click and "hide update". This will hide all highlighted updates and you can shutdown without any updates being installed.

You should notice that when hovering over the shutdown button in the start menu, the tooltip no longer says "shutdown and install updates", and the notification icon has disappeared. The shutdown button may actually change to "sleep" depending on your configuration.

Hi, You can do it easy by Ctrl Alt Del, then shut down is in the bottom right corner, click the arrow and just choose shut down :-) hope it helps

This is not true and it is a major frustration of mine with Windows 7. I have been in IT for almost 20 years so before you think I just don't know what I am doing remember that please. I have at least 7 Windows 7 systems and ALL of them install updates on shutdown from time to time even though I have my automatic updating set to notify me but let me choose when to install them. I have Googled on this till my fingers bleed and can find very little information. I don't want a patch to load for any reason until I allow it. Someone in there infinite wisdom at MS has "fixed" this to protect the poor dumb people out there who need mama Microsoft to look out for them. Even as I type this I am watching my laptop on a Friday when I want to go home and I went to shut down and "presto" updates from Microsoft. So... has anyone found the registry hack or whatever is required to fix this so it wont update without me choosing to install updates. I know I can block the update websites w. my firewall, but I would prefer it just work like it is supposed too!!!!!!!!!!

How I would love to point MS Engineers face into my screen right now and ask WTF is that? Why is your operating system loading updates without me choosing to install them?

FRUSTRATED!!!
