Is there a way to shutdown windows 7 without being forced to install the updates? There are plenty of times when updates are ready but i want the computer off and ready to move. I hate having to wait for updates when i don't even tell it to do them.

I hear that the shutdown option you desire was requested during the beta of Windows 7 but the request apparently went unheard.

Sorry but, about the only thing I can suggest is to change Windows Updates' settings to allow you when to decide to download and install the updates when you have the appropriate amount of time to do so. My Win 7 system is set to that option so I can't say what the Download updates but let me choose whether to install them option will give you another shutdown option that does not install updates.

    To get an update out of the queue, go to "**Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Update\Select updates to install"**and uncheck the update that you don't want installed. This only stops it temporarily and if you only do this Windows will try to install it again next time around.

    To completely get rid of the update, right click the listing for the update and select "Hide Update". This will remove the update from the list and stop Windows from automatically selecting it.

    Sadly, your post is three years old and I didn't see it until now so...y'know...if you haven't updated your Windows since 2010 then I hope I've helped you out. Yay?

    The people at microsoft are obviously retarded.

    I turn my computer off when I go to bed, and I don't want the noise from it, so not having the option to just shut down, is nothing short of retarded.

    Hi, You can do it easy by Ctrl Alt Del, then shut down is in the bottom right corner, click the arrow and just choose shut down :-) hope it helps

    One more bullshit answer. That does not work. It installs the updates anyway.

    Yes there is a way you can shut down your computer without doing updates. You simply choose the ALT-key and then the F4 key, and select shutdown instead of install updates and shutdown. This works.
