Error "Adding the device failed resulting in an unkown error. 0x80004005" when adding Bluetooth headset

I'm having an issue re-pairing my Bluetooth headset with my laptop.  I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise 64.  I have repeated this behavior with 2 different headsets.  Here's the problem:

1.  I pair the headset with my laptop and everthing works fine

2.  I go into Bluetooth Devices and remove the headset device

3.  I then attempt to pair the headset to the laptop and receive the error

I have not been able to find anything online to help.  I have spoken to the manufacturer (Plantronics) and they were also unable to help.  Surely there's got to be a way to get it to pair again.  I'm desperate for help.  I really don't want to rebuild my machine just to get the headset to pair again.

Hi guys,

I couldn't pair either of my two headsets to my Windows 7 machine.  Here's what fixed it for me.  In Device Manager, under Bluetooth Radios, I opened the properties for my radio (Broadcom 2046 Bluetooth 2.1+EDR USB Device with First Connect).  Under the Advanced tab, I took the hyphen out of my radio's name.  The headsets paired immediately after that.  

This is a pretty serious bug considering the radio takes its name from the computer name, which is username-PC by default when you install Windows 7.

I hope this solves your problems.  

Note that in order to actually use the headset, you will probably have to update your Bluetooth drivers if you haven't done so already.  Go to http://www.broadcom.com/support/bluetooth/update.php

    I just sorted the same problem, been on the web for weeks looking into different ways to get around the driver issue. Stumbled onto this page that has worked fine for me.

    "As Plantronics doesn't seem to provide a proper solution under Vista by saying that it is Microsoft's problem and not theirs, I went into an investigation on this matter and found out that this is (again) a traditional error with the USBAUDIO.sys file which fails some devices under Vista while it works OK under XP.

    I have packed a file and share it with you guys in order to let you use your Plantronics adapter as well under Vista.

    Note that as it makes use of the previous USBAUDIO.sys from XP it will obviously won't work under Vista 64.

    Installation instructions:

    1. Download the driver pack at here.
    2. Unzip the contents of the downloaded file to a directory of your choice on your hard drive.
    3. Make sure the USB adapter of the Plantronics Voyager is inserted in your computer.
    4. Click on the “Start” button.
    5. Click on “Control Panel”.
    6. Double-click on the “System” icon.
    7. Click on “Device Manager”, in the left menu, below “Tasks”.
    8. Confirm the action by clicking on the “Continue” button in the next confirmation page.
    9. Under “Sound, video and game controllers” category you will normally find a line called “BT Plantronics Adapter” marked with a yellow sign. This is actually the module calling the trouble and for which we will install the drivers. Double-click on the “BT Plantronics Adapter” line.
    10. On the default “General” tab, below “Device status”, the system shows the message “This device cannot start. (Code 10). Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.”.

    Click on the “Driver” tab on the top.

    1. Click on the “Update driver” button.
    2. Click the “Browse my computer for driver software”.
    3. Click on “Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer”.
    4. Click on the “Have disk” button.
    5. Click on the “Browse” button and select the directory where you unzipped the drivers files at point 2. Then click the “open” button and then “OK”.
    6. The next screen shows “USB Audio Device” below the model list. Click “Next”.
    7. Windows shows next a warning message indicating that it can’t verify the publisher of this driver software. Click on “Install this driver software anyway” and wait for the installation to finish.

    Windows should confirm the correct installation by the message “Windows has finished installing the driver software for this device: USB Audio Device”.

    1. Installation finished. Enjoy using your Plantronics Voyager 510 under Windows Vista."

    I get the same trying to add an apple bluetooth keyboard although the apple bluetooth mouse works fine

    I have the same problem.

    Windows 7 Utimate (NO beta here)

    Intel Quad core 9550

    Asus board

    8 gigs of ram.

    and "Shalini S" (how do you pronounce that ?)

    Hi Bearles,

    1. Which version of software application or drivers is installed on the computer?
    2. Is Windows 7 is installed on the computer?

    Follow the steps given below:

    1. You have to manually add the Bluetooth headset .  Do this by bringing up the Bluetooth headset 'Add a Device' option from the Bluetooth icon.

    2)  Turn on the Bluetooth headset.

    3)  Press the other button on the bottom of the Bluetooth headset.

         You will see the Bluetooth headset show up in the list of devices to add.

    4)  Select and add the device.

    I would suggest you to reinstall the driver for Bluetooth in vista compatibility mode.
