Error "Adding the device failed resulting in an unkown error. 0x80004005" when adding Bluetooth headset

I'm having an issue re-pairing my Bluetooth headset with my laptop.  I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise 64.  I have repeated this behavior with 2 different headsets.  Here's the problem:

1.  I pair the headset with my laptop and everthing works fine

2.  I go into Bluetooth Devices and remove the headset device

3.  I then attempt to pair the headset to the laptop and receive the error

I have not been able to find anything online to help.  I have spoken to the manufacturer (Plantronics) and they were also unable to help.  Surely there's got to be a way to get it to pair again.  I'm desperate for help.  I really don't want to rebuild my machine just to get the headset to pair again.

Hi guys,

I couldn't pair either of my two headsets to my Windows 7 machine.  Here's what fixed it for me.  In Device Manager, under Bluetooth Radios, I opened the properties for my radio (Broadcom 2046 Bluetooth 2.1+EDR USB Device with First Connect).  Under the Advanced tab, I took the hyphen out of my radio's name.  The headsets paired immediately after that.  

This is a pretty serious bug considering the radio takes its name from the computer name, which is username-PC by default when you install Windows 7.

I hope this solves your problems.  

Note that in order to actually use the headset, you will probably have to update your Bluetooth drivers if you haven't done so already.  Go to http://www.broadcom.com/support/bluetooth/update.php

    I've tried removing the software and moving it to a different port again - it still reinstalls all the driver software but then gives the same error.

    Interestingly I've tried changing the name of the BT mouse (as it 'sees' it fine and I can click on properties for it when in the 'add device' screen) and it seems to remember this name even when I uninstall/reinstall the BT drivers.  This makes me think (as Tom said before) that Windows is caching this pairing somewhere, but I can't for the life of me work out where this is - I've tried searcing the registry but to no avail.

    I also tried several times right after each other and it finally went through. I chose "Pair without code" though.

    Alan -- Did you try uninstalling the BT drivers to your dongle? ... Go to your Device Manager (usually just typing 'Device Manager' from the Start Menu search bar will do it, otherwise, in the Control Panel (the newer, categorized one in Vista/7), under System and Security -> System, click 'Device Manager' (should have a security shield next to it) ...

    The top device category in your device manager should be 'Bluetooth Radios'; expand this and right click over each/any component shown ... select 'Uninstall' ... 

    ... then try moving your dongle to a previously-unused USB port

    This is what I did to get my successful pairing ... i have since been able to manually connect/disconnect without issue.

    Hello Shalini,

    I am having the exact same issue - Win7 Professional 32 bit on an HP Elitebook 2530P.

    I paired the Plantronics Discovery 975 bluetooth headset with Win 7 initially - everything worked fine.

    I opened the Control Panel> All Control Panel Items > Devices and Printers folder.

    I right-clicked the bluetooth headset and clicked Remove Device.

    After the device was successfully removed from my Win 7 Professional 32 bit system, I tried to re-add it via "Add a Device" option from the bluetooth icon.

    I place the bluetooth headset in pairing mode.

    Win 7 states "Select device to add to this computer" and lists "9xx Plantronics" Bluetooth headset (which is the device I am trying to add to the computer).

    I click the Next button.

    I receive the same error as Bearles:

    Adding the device failed resulting in an unknown error. 0x80004005 I have tried re-installing the bluetooth driver software from HP for the Broadcom 2045 chip built-in to my laptop. I used Vista Compatibility Mode, as you suggested when running the program. After re-booting and re-trying to Add Device for my bluetooth headset, I get the same error.

    Can you please assist further?
