Microsoft Edge closes immediately upon opening. I've tried many fixes none work.

Yesterday, I wanted to clean up my favorites in Edge (remove duplicates, remove obsolete links). In the midst of this, Edge closed without warning or error message. When I restarted Edge, it closed immediately. I could not select the three dots in the top right. It closed too quickly.

I found several possible solutions including tools in the Settings/Apps menu, other fixes involving removing and then reinstituting the %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe directory

None of these fixes worked.

When I restart Edge, it closes immediately.

How can I get it to work properly?

    We have several users where Edge (v116.0.1938.69) starts and immediately crashes. The only thing that helps is deleting all the files in the following folder:

    C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Sync Data\LevelDB

    After deleting the files in this folder Edge starts without a problem.

    Had the same issue, but resolved it by looking at the extensions that were updated.

    Go to C:\Users<USER>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Extensions

    Sort folder by "Date Modified"

    If you see one that has been modified recently - for me, last night - it may be the cause. The names of these folders won't make any sense, and I couldn't tell you what the extension was, however for me I took a copy of the following folder then deleted it. Edge restarted ok

    cjpijioncddkancpiedagilpojbgmoni

    After starting edge, the above folder was re-instated.

    ALWAYS TAKE A COPY of the folder so you can reinstate it if you need.

    The folder can be located as follows:

    Note - everywhere you see "username" this should reflect your local pc account

    1. Window+R
    2. run %localappdata% ; this opens file explorer to the C:\Users*username*\AppData\Local folder
    3. navigate to the microsoft folder; C:\Users*username*\AppData\Local\Microsoft
    4. navigate to the Edge folder; C:\Users*username*\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge
    5. navigate to the "user Date" folder; C:\Users*username*\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data
    6. find the Default folder and rename this to original-folder;
    7. then restart Edge

    This will reset Edge to a default new profile startup; if your information is syncd to Microsoft; the shortcuts and links and passwords will be restored from the Internet based on the last time it was syncd up.

    This was the only solution for me that worked.

    How did I discover this:

    (1) in my default normal profile Edge continuously shutdown on startup; nothing worked

    (1-a) - was unable to launch Edge and try any of the recommended solutions

    (1-b) - was unable to initiate a Repair from Settings and Edge under Apps - yes, it did download and re-install but on launch shut down

    (1-c) - I verified via TaskManager that no Edge or Edge Related Apps were running during the re-install/Repair

    (2) Verified Edge worked fine on the PC via another Profile on the PC

    (3) Researched the Internet (using another browser) and after 6 hours of searching found one source that stepped through the solutions; https://youtu.be/oTVTviAtYZ8?si=lCYb0eCmHld36spe  In the video, the second solution (beyond Repair) was the key that worked - at least in my case. This is outlined above.

    Beyond this, Please BeCareful if youve never ever had to resolve issues using Powershell or unfamiliar with command oriented solutions or file manipluation.

    Fortunately, from DOS 2.1 forward I've got some historical experience.

    My logic is start simple and work into the complex as needed.

    Best of Luck.

    No. This didn't help. I've tried many possible fixes (SFC /scannow), disk clean.up, etc.) nothing worked.

    I'll have to use Chrome...

    Repair Microsoft Edge as instructed below:

    1. Open Start and select "Settings > Apps > Apps & features";
    2. Look for Microsoft Edge and select it;
    3. Select the "Modify" button;
    4. At the confirmation screen, select "Repair".

    See if MS Edge will open stable.

    Feel free to ask back any questions.
