Edge keeps running in the Background

Hi All,

I know ... this is old and usually easy ... turn off "Startup Boost" and "Continue running background apps ..."

I have those off and it always worked they way it supposed to.

All of a sudden Edge keeps running.

Indication for still running comes from Ccleaner, which removes all trackers. All of a sudden I get the message:

(paraphrased) Ccleaner can't clean because Edge is still running ... needs to be forced shut down"

In Task manager I also still see 11 Edge processes going even though Edge is shut off.

Again ... "Startup Boost" and "Background Apps ..." are unchecked in settings.

Any suggestions?

I repaired Edge already and nothing changed. Its updated.

PS: I checked in another machine (Win10), same Edge version ... no problems here ... all Edge processes in Task Manager disappear

when shutting Edge down.

Thanks

Yes, regarding the use of edge beta, I tested the following=

    1. Install Microsoft Edge Beta
    2. Check and kill in Task manager any Edge processes which is still running.
    3. From now on, leave alone the stable version and use the beta version instead.

When the beta close, all Edge processes running in the background are closed too.

In reference to this previously posted site:

    Hi LShel42,

don't know what to say or how far to go with describing the Win10 machine.

In Edge I have, of course, Turbo Boost and run in Background turned off.

Privacy on strict ...that's all there. No hacks in registry or group editor needed.

Edge always closes as soon as I click x.

The machine itself: all updates / separate SSD drives for only system and storage, Intel i9, 32 GB RAM, Nvidia 970 pro ... but I think al that doesn't matter. All in all ... nor special settings regarding Edge, because it never had that problem. It only started with Win11 latest updates (app. 1/2/year ago)

With the Win11 machine - Now I use InPrivate - works great ... no background running and no gossip. However, even without InPrivate I don't have that problem of Edge not shutting down anymore. But I made the registry hacks, Windows Settings changes, uninstalled ANYTHING Ai, e.g. Copilot/ OneDrive, stopped Telemetry, anything Windows reporting, and other stuff ... no background running anymore.

However, I still use InPrivate since one of the changes (as in one of the previous posts) requires to switch to Google in Edge Settings > Privacy > very bottom > Address bar ... don't want anything Google on my machine.

That's all I can come up with right now - hope it helps.
