Edge keeps running in the Background

Hi All,

I know ... this is old and usually easy ... turn off "Startup Boost" and "Continue running background apps ..."

I have those off and it always worked they way it supposed to.

All of a sudden Edge keeps running.

Indication for still running comes from Ccleaner, which removes all trackers. All of a sudden I get the message:

(paraphrased) Ccleaner can't clean because Edge is still running ... needs to be forced shut down"

In Task manager I also still see 11 Edge processes going even though Edge is shut off.

Again ... "Startup Boost" and "Background Apps ..." are unchecked in settings.

Any suggestions?

I repaired Edge already and nothing changed. Its updated.

PS: I checked in another machine (Win10), same Edge version ... no problems here ... all Edge processes in Task Manager disappear

when shutting Edge down.

I know, I don't have it either. I am just saying maybe the bug is fixed on Edge 122.

Hi Ari,

I don't have anything "Edge" in startup under Task Manager. Basically, everything is anyways disabled, except Windows Security.

In Edge Settings: yes, of course Startup Boost and Continue extensions ... are also disabled. No difference.

But again - I set Edge to "InPrivate" as default - no more background processes ... and none of the annoying gossip and sports **** under the search bar. A clean, gray Edge window without any adds or news.

Maybe the problem is fixed on Edge Dev 122, because I tried here and it is working normally. I disable the settings that keeps Edge running in the background. Run speedometer one time and close the browser. Edge is closed and there is no process in task manager.

I don't know if they patched the issue or not, but I tried something and it fixed it for me.

Basically, in the "startup apps" in task manager, I had two edges, one of them had 27 sub processes under it. I disabled the startup for both.

I also disabled the "startup boost" and background extensions in edge settings.

Finally, restart the laptop to see if it has any effect. (shutting down is not an option since it does a semi-hibernation thing, so definitely restart).

I didn't do anything else to registry or anything for edge, but it is fixed now.

Let me know how it goes.

I understand your concern and feel with your worries.

However, I have three fans - all work fine and \i can even regulate them to be on all or just one or two.

About temperature ... there is a small, free app called Speccy, good reputation ... it shows you temperature of all components, amongst other concerns.

Also ... I'm not a Microsoft techie or expert in any other way reg. computers.

I just learned a few things over the years, a lot from this community.

I'm a photo editor and graphic designer and take care of a custom-built machine with lots of power and take care of it

rigorously. That's all can say. And yes ... I have seen machines / laptops that were VERY slow in everything. But I don't

know the answer to that except that they were probably badly maintained, old, outdated and had no SSD.

Try running sfc /scannow ... that usually helps ... or other diagnostics.

However - we are entering a different topic ... slow computer, maintenance, diagnostic, hardware ...

Please find more under slow response / high fan speed or heat / high GPU
