Why is edge running in the background after copilot installation?

As the title says, I was wondering why Edge is running in the background after Windows Update installed and I disabled Copilot from the taskbar. Edge's settings right now are like this:

Sidebar: disabled

Show Bing chat on sidebar: disabled

Startup Boos: disabled

Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed: disabled

And now I found this running in the background with the browser closed:

That's not even the browser's updater service. I stopped the task and it opened itself again a few minutes later.

As if the fake widgets I don't like or use are always running in the background despite many things I've tried, now I have Edge using system resources for no apparent reason.

Please help me find a solution to this problem.

    Disable Start-up Boost and Continue running Background Processes in Edge/ Settings/ System and Performance.

    Disable Edge in Start-up Task manager.

    Run sfc /scannow and DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth in Command Prompt as Administrator.

    Restart the PC.

    Backup all Edge data either signing with a Microsoft Account in edge or Going to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\xxx.x.xxxx.xxx (xxx.x.xxxx.xxx means version no. for eg. 120.0.2210.144) and copying all the user data files and paste it another drive.

    Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\xxx.x.xxxx.xxx (xxx.x.xxxx.xxx means version no. for eg. 120.0.2210.144) and delete all files by pressing Ctrl + A and Shift + Del.

    Reinstall Edge again.

    GO to Control Panel/ Programs/ Programs and Features and select Microsoft Edge and click Change. Then click Repair in the dialog box wait for the process to Complete.

    Reinstall Edge again from Microsoft Store or from the exe file from Microsoft website..

    Nothing else work Try resetting the PC.

    I'm on the same build. You need to activate, it is disabled by default.

    I agree that it's a bug. It's a ridiculous and shameful bug. However, Edge continues running in the background once it is closed, even when Copilot and Widgets are completely disabled in the OS (of course, Startup tasks included) and the Edge sidebar, regardless of the related Edge system and performance settings you select. There isn't a "workaround" that can fix the current situation. Only a hotfix/update from MS Edge or MS Windows devs can fix this mess.

    Not running in the background on my machines. 🤷‍♂️

    Only happens if I use the silly Copilot.

    Edge doesnt appear in my start up settings at all

    Stop using the silly Copilot.

    Copilot is part of EDGE and doesn't shut it off when it closes. 🤷‍♂️
