I don't really appreciate random unidentified things like this that just turn up, especially on a work laptop.

Try this:

Edge > Settings > Search for "Briefcase" > Customize appearance > Show briefcase icon on work profiles | Are you satisfied with seeing the briefcase icon on work profiles?

Note, it looks like you have to be signed in (under your profile) to enact this change.

For any future visitors to this thread:

Settings > Appearance > Show briefcase icon on work profiles > Disable > Restart (not the computer but the button next to the setting).

Sorry, I am not with Microsoft, just another guy on the thread using a work computer like you. It may be an administrative privilege that has you locked out. I was lucky enough to have enough admin rights to shut that annoying thing off.
