Edge is sharing Chrome site logins. How do I prevent this?

This is by far the worst change I have ever seen in a modern browser. I'd happily switched to Edge and was using Chrome for work as my company uses Google apps. I've been trying to figure out why, if I want to play a youtube video on Edge, my account has now switched to work and I'm signed out of my personal account. Hell, just to respond to this post I had to sign out of my company account despite never logging in. Not only that but doing any of the above will in turn log me out of my work account in Chrome. Absolutely insane.

What is being reported here is NOT impossible, as it is very well happening starting the past month or two. I launch Edge and I log into an account on a given site while I am already logged into the same site on Chrome using a different account.

Then I go to Chrome and I find that I got logged out of the account I was logged into on Chrome and instead, I am logged into the same account I logged into on Edge.

What this means is that Microsoft is forcing its users to migrate away from Chrome. This will not bode well for Microsoft, it will only cause resentment among users.

It’s not an at-startup syncing that’s causing it, at least for me. If I sign out and sign in to a different account in Chrome, as soon as I hit refresh in edge it shows the same, new account signed in.

Edge has option to stop importing other browsers data. just turn this off.

and issue resolved.

I mean lets say you are a Doctor and suddenly your browser on the clinic screen has bookmarks to adult content?

I see the danger, but I'd point out that this is a classic use-case for separate browser profiles. It's really easy to keep Dr Jekyll's stuff quite separate from Mr Hyde's by giving each of them his own browser profile. Each profile has its own data store, with history, cookies, favourites, passwords and so on completely divorced from every other profile's. This is how I switch with one click between different email accounts at the same webmail site, for example.

The vast majority of people will always take the obvious approach. The obvious approach is running two browsers. I had to look up what browser profiles are, and while it looks interesting, I’m still very happy with my two browser solution. One of those browser is now Chrome and the other os Firefox, since they respect my desire for separation.

I wonder what proportion of users solve the problem using browser profiles and what proportion run two browsers? I bet less than 1% use the profiles. As I said, I’d never even heard of them. It’s a power user feature really.

This is a dangerous, and irresponsible change since it disregards privacy. And what do you say to the doctor who ends up in the situation above? I don’t think “you should have used browser profiles” is an answer that’d go down too well…

But I get the feeling it’s not an intentional change to the default, so I sincerely hope this gets the attention it needs. I will raise on Reddit.
