Edge Chromium - Download File - Open vs. Save Option Pop-up Window

I recently installed Edge Chromium and found that the program has inherited the Chrome method of downloading files, wherein the file automatically downloads to the downloads folder (or other selected folder), then gives the user the option to open the file or open the file location folder.

I much prefer the old IE/Edge download file method with the open vs save option pop-up window that allowed the user to open the file (to a temp location) or save/save-as the file to a location specified by the user at the time of download, all of which occurred before the file is downloaded locally.

The Chrome download method is one of the reasons I never switched to Chrome in the first place, and now it appears we have lost the old IE/Edge method.  The Chrome method leads to many unnecessary downloads in a non-temp folder location, bloating my storage.  I've turned on the option in Edge Chromium to "ask where to save file before download", but it only works intermittently and still doesn't allow the user to open the file to a temp location for files the user doesn't plan to save long term (i.e. for files I only want to print, not save).

How do we get Microsoft to add the old IE/Edge download method back?  Seems like a very simple code.  I know that Edge Chromium accepts extensions, can someone with the appropriate skills build an extension to add back the functionality?

"save" button has a drop down menu that displays only "save"

Please look again. If you click on the left-hand part of that button avoiding the dropdown chevron ˅ , do you not get a Save as dialogue? 

You might submit feedback to the effect that the downloads flyout is too narrow to permit the display of more than the first few characters of Enregistrer comme ...

    This too is my biggest gripe with new Edge.

    Firefox shows me a very convenient "Open With"/"Save As" dialog box. Edge pollutes my hard drive.

    I don't need to download a .torrent file - ever. Open it from Temp.

     the file simply opens in the temp folder and when you close the respected app the file is removed automatically. @Microsoft please sort this. 

    You can change download location in Settings

    Mine go to Downloads folder and are available even after opening the file.

    The Original post says we want to NOT save it in a regular folder. We want to save it in a TEMP folder. And we want it to be the DEFAULT way of viewing the file. We do NOT want to have to keep a copy of the file in a normal folder every time we browse it.  BUT, we still want the CHOICE of saving it. The old method (right-click to get "save, save as...") is the preferred way of handling these links. Left-click should ALWAYS just open the file from the TEMP folder, so it will be AUTOMATICALLY deleted when TEMP is cleared.

    Why does MS assume we WANT the Chrome mechanism AND the Chrome handling of HTML and CSS? Is MS going to merge with Google? Are they getting ready to exit the browser business leaving us hanging? Is this another Windows 8 design? Remember how the design killed it (not user-friendly)? Deja vu?

    yes please lets add this option again, at the very least like you say, make it an option to enable.

    We have users that need to only view the excel or word docs, and others that are able to edit the original file instead of having it save a copy every time they click the link.

    The way it is now, no changes to the document go back and save to the original file on the server.

    True that, the feature can be offered with a default of OFF, but the potion to turn ON. can also be added in permissions where websites can be given permission to use that feature, thus trusted sites will work as normal for all, and protection from other sites will remain in place.

    Come on Microsoft show some support....
