How to prevent video autoplay in Chromium Edge

Hi

I've upgraded to chromium edge but now videos are autoplaying again. I had this disabled on classic Edge but can't work out how to do this on the new version.

I've set "Media autoplay" to "Limit" in the "Site Permissions" section of settings but this doesn't seem to have had any effect at all (yes, I've restarted Edge / Windows).

I had also had this problem with dev / beta builds of Edge but hadn't got around to chasing it up until it became my primary browser.

In particular it's annoying on the MSN new pages linked to from the new tab page in Edge when they all have autoplaying video.

Why isn't there an option called "Block"?

You'll probably find that the block option has to be enabled. Copy the next line into the address bar and press Enter:

edge://flags/#edge-autoplay-user-setting-block-option

Once this flag is enabled, you should see Block on the autoplay options menu.

I would suggest you refer to the below steps and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Copy edge://flags/ and paste it to the browser's address bar.
  3. Type 'Show block option in autoplay settings' and set it to 'Enable'.
  4. Copy edge://settings/profiles and paste it to the browser's address bar.
  5. Type 'Media autoplay' click it.
  6. Set it to 'Block'.
  7. Restart your computer, and when it boots up, check to see whether or not the problem has been resolved.

In the new Microsoft Edge, the option of automatic playback is limited.

However, you can install an extension like autoplayblocker from the Chrome web store to disable Autoplay. (You may have to enable extensions from other store).

    ... viewing pages that have autoplay videos, for example CNN or BBC. 

    I looked around for a page at the BBC site with video that might autoplay when I visit it. This one should, I think: BBC iPlayer - Watch BBC News live. If I have autoplay set to Allow, it does. If I have autoplay set to Block, it doesn't.

    Again I'll ask - can you give the URL of a page where a video autoplays in Edge even though autoplay is set to Block?

    I'm not sure what you mean about using BBC iPlayer as I do not need to use it. In order to set Firefox to not autoplay videos, go to Firefox Settings/Options/Privacy and Security. Scroll down to Permissions where you will find Autoplay. Click on Settings to the right of that word and make your choice from the drop-down menu.

    Then view any BBC or other video of your choice on the internet. A red line will form the border of the chosen video with word "Click to play" appearing top centre within the red border. It works every time.

    ... anyone who deals daily with Msft knows that they do not [appreciate getting feedback that helps them improve their products] ... feedback buttons aren't monitored ... It's always been this way....... 

    This is just not true as far as Edge is concerned. At the top of this forum, you'll see the sticky called Top Feedback Summary for Microsoft Edge - December 2020. This is reproduced from the regularly updated post of the same name at TechCommunity, and represents a collation of the most common bug reports and feature requests submitted via the browser's own feedback app. Many of the changes and improvements we've seen, especially since the browser went public almost a year ago, were triggered by this large volume of feedback. 

    FWIW, the option to block video autoplay works precisely as I expect it to: if I visit a site where previously a video would start playing (e.g. youtube.com), it doesn't when this option is enabled. If this isn't happening for you or anyone else reading this, the Edge team want to know about it. Alt-Shift-i.

    so if this is not true why is it not fixed, oh and by the way it does not function as it should, no matter what setting you set the media autoplay mode to, videos still autoplay and I'm not the only one pointing this out there are 20 pages of people who have also left feedback got no reply and came here as the last resort before dumping edge, looks like its time i switch to firefox as i had enough of posting feedback asking for help here the simple answer is if it dont work properly dump it.

    here is the other major pain edge constantly asks you to manage cookies every time since the last update
