How to prevent video autoplay in Chromium Edge

Hi

I've upgraded to chromium edge but now videos are autoplaying again. I had this disabled on classic Edge but can't work out how to do this on the new version.

I've set "Media autoplay" to "Limit" in the "Site Permissions" section of settings but this doesn't seem to have had any effect at all (yes, I've restarted Edge / Windows).

I had also had this problem with dev / beta builds of Edge but hadn't got around to chasing it up until it became my primary browser.

In particular it's annoying on the MSN new pages linked to from the new tab page in Edge when they all have autoplaying video.

Why isn't there an option called "Block"?

You'll probably find that the block option has to be enabled. Copy the next line into the address bar and press Enter:

edge://flags/#edge-autoplay-user-setting-block-option

Once this flag is enabled, you should see Block on the autoplay options menu.

I would suggest you refer to the below steps and check if it helps to resolve the issue.

  1. Open Microsoft Edge.
  2. Copy edge://flags/ and paste it to the browser's address bar.
  3. Type 'Show block option in autoplay settings' and set it to 'Enable'.
  4. Copy edge://settings/profiles and paste it to the browser's address bar.
  5. Type 'Media autoplay' click it.
  6. Set it to 'Block'.
  7. Restart your computer, and when it boots up, check to see whether or not the problem has been resolved.

I am Sumit, an Independent Advisor and a 3 year Windows Insider MVP here to help.

In the new Microsoft Edge, the option of automatic playback is limited.

However, you can install an extension like autoplayblocker from the Chrome web store to disable Autoplay. (You may have to enable extensions from other store).

    Very few websites use Flash for video any more (and new Edge blocks it by default). Java is not supported on new Edge.

    The problem is HTML5 video, which can only be blocked if the browser implements a feature (properly) to do it.

    Microsoft / Chromium still haven't implemented the block correctly, despite the number of people who suggest the same fix of setting the flag to enable block (which doesn't work).

    Hi Russ

    In the address bar of Edge Chromium, paste this and hit EnterL

    edge://flags

    Type Block in the search Box, then enable 'Show Block Options in AutoPlay Settings'

    Edge will restart

    Then go back to Settings - Site Permissions and go to 'Media Autoplay' to set your preference . ..
