For some reason my new Surface is shutting off randomly. I check the setting and a few other things but it's still randomly turns off without warning. I'm losing some of my school work because of it. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hey Everyone,

As of 7/14, the fix for this issue has completed testing and is now live, please go update your Surface Pro via Windows Update to get the latest download. You can obtain this fix by checking Settings> Update & security > Windows Update

The Surface Pro Update History page has been updated with the details of this release and the update is also available on the Surface Pro Drivers and Firmware page as part of the MSI installation package available for download.

ZDNet posted a followup to their prior article. re; the hibernation issue. The worst part of the article was what MS said when they were contacted by ZDNet for comment.

"Update: A Microsoft spokesperson said the company had nothing more to say beyond the statement from "BryanH" quoted above. The company also is not quantifying beyond "a small group" the number of people affected by this issue."

Meanwhile, I took my original SFP, made an exchange at the MS store. And, I still experience the hibernation issue.

The longer MS waits this thing out, the worse their hardware reputation gets.

This is the fourth surface device that I've ever owned.  I really hope Microsoft figures this out.   I bought this Surface (i5, 8, 256) less than two weeks ago and it's gone into hibernation four times on me.  I could be in the middle of typing something or playing a card game and it just shuts off.   For what Microsoft is charging for this hardware this is a disgrace, there is no excuse for this.

I've also had this problem on my New Surface Pro with M3 processor. It's only on battery power that it happens. I've used it plugged in exclusively the last few days without the issue. For a brand new device it shouldn't have an issue like this out of the box, and it is clearly much more widespread than people are letting on. I bought on 6/17. I had issues with my phone battery after having it for a while where the battery had voltage issues and kept shutting off. I hope the batteries in these devices aren't problematic. Microsoft increased the battery life a lot from the SP4. I wonder at what cost?

It's a shame that it's gotten to a point that I'm scared to use it unplugged for long because I don't want to be annoyed by an unexpected hibernation, but I'm going to run on battery exclusively these next few days and make a determination if I will take it back or not. I have loved nearly everything about the Surface Pro (this is the first I've ever owned) since buying it besides this highly frustrating issue.

Yes I agree, it doesn't seem to have the hibernation issue when plugged in. I used it plugged in for 2 days and no issues. And I use it 24/7.

Before when I used it unplugged, at its worst I had about 10 hibernations within half an hour. It even decided to eject my usb. So at that instance I just switched it off and left it alone.

I had the same issue of seemingly random hibernation when working on battery.  No issues when plugged in.  Was using it with a keyboard.  Model i5/8Gb RAM/256Gb drive.  It was an early batch (pre-ordered) so have returned it within the 30days' window via UPS.  Once I get the refund I will decide when to repurchase (and where from) depending on the Microsoft online store returns experience.   My device also had screen light bleed along the bottom that I was prepared to live with, but I can't live with random hibernation as this is a work device.

Having seen a few people experience the same issue on a repurchased device, I am somewhat wary of rushing in to buy another too soon, as I imagine a lot of people are.  I would feel more confident if Microsoft would fully acknowledge the issue as well as how widespread it is.

Fingers crossed for MS fixing this soon, as it is otherwise an amazing device.
