For some reason my new Surface is shutting off randomly. I check the setting and a few other things but it's still randomly turns off without warning. I'm losing some of my school work because of it. Is anyone else having this problem?

As of 7/14, the fix for this issue has completed testing and is now live, please go update your Surface Pro via Windows Update to get the latest download. You can obtain this fix by checking Settings> Update & security > Windows Update
The Surface Pro Update History page has been updated with the details of this release and the update is also available on the Surface Pro Drivers and Firmware page as part of the MSI installation package available for download.

I am having this issue too. i7, 8gb New Surface Pro 2017 that I've had less than one week, bought from the MS store. It has turned off perhaps 4 or 5 times so far, seemingly randomly. A couple of times during light web browsing in Firefox, once using Sketchbook Pro. The device has never been hot when it has done this. Usually used upright on my lap with and without the keyboard attached.
Seems to happen when not plugged in. I can't see anything noteworthy in the event viewer, but I'm not really sure what to look for. There is absolutely no warning before it turns off either - no slowdowns or extra fan noise or anything.
It is certainly turning off, becuase when I press the power button I am presented with the windows logo.
I've also found my battery life to be pretty abismal. Maxing out at maybe 5 hours with only light web browsing. Not sure if this is related, but it's a far cry from what is on the MS website and what reviewers seem to be getting...

I don't know much about the Surface Pro but I had an idea.
Are you running Windows Hello?
My thought is... If it is used to login and keep the device active as long as you are in front of it, maybe the camera goes into some standy mode to save power and Windows Hello no longer sees you and locks the device.
I'm having the same problem i5,8,256, but what I noticed with the going black, is its definitely something with the brightness, I was changing the brightness with the slider in the settings, and it went black when I went above like 2, but if I slide it back down to 0, it came back on, so there is some critical error happening with the brightness on the device.
