For some reason my new Surface is shutting off randomly. I check the setting and a few other things but it's still randomly turns off without warning. I'm losing some of my school work because of it. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hey Everyone,

As of 7/14, the fix for this issue has completed testing and is now live, please go update your Surface Pro via Windows Update to get the latest download. You can obtain this fix by checking Settings> Update & security > Windows Update

The Surface Pro Update History page has been updated with the details of this release and the update is also available on the Surface Pro Drivers and Firmware page as part of the MSI installation package available for download.

I sympathise with those who the update has not resolved their issue. Mine was resolved immediately after the update, and from hearing from others who had the same issue, it seems like it has been resolved for the majority of us.

If you are still having this issue, I would personally recommend the following:

    1. Go back in this thread and find the link/name of the update, and manually install it, in case it hasn't installed automatically for some reason or another.
    2. If the problem persists, perhaps you are getting confused between this hibernating issue, and a separate issue linked with automatic brightness control that also sometimes leads to sudden hibernation (especially if you operate at 0% brightness and display a dark screen). Go to the following thread, and follow the instructions given by some users there about installing Intel drivers. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surfpronew-surfdrivers/my-surface-tries-to-change-the-screen-brightness/28f16534-42c8-4594-a77f-7dcaffa23826. Many have reported it has resolved the issue for them. I have not had the time to do it yet myself, since this brightness issue has only had a serious impact on me once so far, and hence is not currently priority for me.
    3. If the problem still persists, at this point I recommend you exchange your surface. Speak to a Microsoft assistant, or go the store you bought it from. There's probably something about your specific device that is not allowing the fixes to work. When I last spoke to Microsoft, before the problem was resolved for me, they told me that if my hibernating problem persists I can exchange any time I wanted (at the time I told them I will wait and see what happens).

As a side note, I have been having a different issue right from the beginning, which is quite serious for me. I initially assumed it is linked with the hibernation issue, but now that that has been resolved this still continues: my micro SD card randomly ejects itself. If I am working on a document saved on the SD card, it means the document can get corrupted and I could loose it forever. Sometimes days go by and there is no issue. Other times it happens several times within as short a period as half an hour. The SD card I am using is a new high quality high speed Kingston micro SD card. I am curious to know if anyone else has experienced this with their device, and if anyone has any advice. I will open a new thread for this question, however, since many surface Pro users have been following this thread, I thought it would be useful to add it here too.

Best of luck for anyone who is still experiencing the hibernation issue.

I have experienced the same issue for years on my Surface Pro, the first edition, my micro-SD card going on and off randomly, just like you described. The card is SanDisk 128GB, and there was a SanDisk 64GB first, with the same problems. The only reason I didn't care much was that I only kept movie and music files on it, pointing the card as iTunes storage, so the files were easy to re-download in case anything went wrong. The only things that went wrong so far were movies sometimes refusing to play until I removed/re-inserted the card. But because mine is a different version of the Surface, the issue is probably related to the system and not the hardware. Please create a thread dedicated to this question and post a link in here.
