For some reason my new Surface is shutting off randomly. I check the setting and a few other things but it's still randomly turns off without warning. I'm losing some of my school work because of it. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hey Everyone,

As of 7/14, the fix for this issue has completed testing and is now live, please go update your Surface Pro via Windows Update to get the latest download. You can obtain this fix by checking Settings> Update & security > Windows Update

The Surface Pro Update History page has been updated with the details of this release and the update is also available on the Surface Pro Drivers and Firmware page as part of the MSI installation package available for download.

Ok, I hope this helps: This is a firmware update according to the Surface Pro Update History. Which may explain why some people are seeing success hard-resetting the device, going into the UEFI settings and simply exiting.  My Surface was consistently resetting within 5 minutes of being plugged into my dock. Since this hard reset I haven't seen it happen.  Keep in mind I did make sure I had the update from https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/install-update-activate/surface-pro-update-history applied before resetting.

It has worked for others as well. Hopefully it does for you too:

"Hold the power button until the unit shuts off. Then hold the power button and the volume up button down when restarting and let it boot into the Surface UEFI menu. Then scroll down and click exit and then restart and voila."

I'll reply in a couple of days to see if the if the fix holds.

When I am sitting in my armchair and surfing the web it is "just" annoying, when my Surface Pro shuts down without any reason. When I am giving a Powerpoint presentation to 200 students and its shutting down, then it is really embarrassing. For Microsoft! While I am restarting my Surface the class is making old and new jokes about Microsoft. And probably none of the students will buy a Surface.

Anyhow, further search of the web seems to proof that there is still no software solution to this problem. I would be very glad, if people from MS could teach me otherwise!

The only way to solve the problem - the web says -  is to exchange the hardware. Since I have a very courteous dealer this will probably be no problem. However, initiating the exchange, picking up the device, installing and setting up the software will cost me almost one working day. Since I use the Surface for professional purposes and if I am taking in account my daily rates that is easily tripling the price of the Surface.

Yes, I love my Surface Pro.

There are SOME country specific drivers, like

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=55484

But if you have installed everything offered by Windows Update and have this

issue, suggest you return your Surface and repurchase. Don't exchange as you

    will get a used refurb.

    >>Can anyone tell me if this: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=55484 wiill it work for a european surface?

    Hi BryanH,

It may be there remains some sort of problem that the fix for the hibernation issue did not address.

I was using my new Surface Pro (m3) last night on a flight home.  It was dark in the airplane cabin so I disabled the automatic brightness settings and manually set it to the lowest brightness level.  I used the device for several minutes using Outlook.  I closed the device for a few, and when I opened it back up the screen became very bright.  I checked the brightness setting and found them as I left them, auto-brightness disabled.  I then re-enabled automatic brightness and then disabled it again with no change in brightness.  I restarted the Surface at that point.  When it came back up it operated fine for a few moments, but then the display became bright on its own.  When I tried to mess with the brightness settings the screen went blank -- I thought it crashed.  I pressed the power button and it came back up slowly, but when I logged back in Outlook was found to still be running. So, somehow, the Surface sent itself into hibernation.  By the way, I was running this Surface on the Power Mode for "best battery life."

I purchased this about two weeks ago.  Other than this one event, this Surface Pro (m3) has worked perfectly with no issues.  I am really impressed with this m3 processor.  It runs very well and seems only slow when installing large programs, working with large graphic files or working with large Power Pivot data models.

I would definitely recommend the Surface Pro m3 to anyone who is wondering.  It really is an awesome device.
