For some reason my new Surface is shutting off randomly. I check the setting and a few other things but it's still randomly turns off without warning. I'm losing some of my school work because of it. Is anyone else having this problem?

As of 7/14, the fix for this issue has completed testing and is now live, please go update your Surface Pro via Windows Update to get the latest download. You can obtain this fix by checking Settings> Update & security > Windows Update
The Surface Pro Update History page has been updated with the details of this release and the update is also available on the Surface Pro Drivers and Firmware page as part of the MSI installation package available for download.

Hi Barb,
the issue I am still having is the screen going off(/black) and it requires the power button to be pressed twice to bring up the initial/wallpaper screen. The need to press the power button twice suggests that when the screen goes off, the Surface is operating as it was, only now the screen is off - the first press behaves as it normally would and turns off the screen (though in this scenario its already off) and then the second press behaves as normal and turns on the screen.
It can be recreated in several ways but its requires the brightness to be 0% (though possibly up as far as 3%) and it involves a change in the on screen content.
One seemingly reliable way to recreate it is, with 0% brightness, put the surface into 'tablet mode', then on the desktop select 'Pinned tiles' from the left hand side-bar. Now select 'All apps' from the left hand side-bar. Wait 15 secs (the screen brightness should suddenly increase greatly during this time). Now select 'All apps' from the left hand side-bar - screen should almost immediately go off.

I don't know if this is related but I just let my surface pro idle for 30 minutes and it shut down.
I had to press the power button and the black and white windows logo appeared.

it didn't shut down it went into hibernation the event log said boot policy 0x2

there is a event log that says "the system is entering sleep" "sleep reason hibernate from sleep - user away predicted"
So maybe it is supposed to work this way and hibernate. even though its not set up in the power options.

its called Adaptive Hibernation.
I read somewhere that if you don't want it to do this go to settings > system > power and sleep and uncheck
"Save me power when my device knows I'm away."
the only problem no is I got a BSOD I think it said it was related to win32kbase.sys I got this after the firmware update.
can you specify exactly what you are using for the looping video test? that
"should" make it easy for Microsoft to repro since you can recreate 100%. And
for the sake of completeness, which Surface PRO SKU do you have?
(if you give them 100% reproducible step by step instructions and hardware
specs, they should be able to repro in house.. )
