For some reason my new Surface is shutting off randomly. I check the setting and a few other things but it's still randomly turns off without warning. I'm losing some of my school work because of it. Is anyone else having this problem?

As of 7/14, the fix for this issue has completed testing and is now live, please go update your Surface Pro via Windows Update to get the latest download. You can obtain this fix by checking Settings> Update & security > Windows Update
The Surface Pro Update History page has been updated with the details of this release and the update is also available on the Surface Pro Drivers and Firmware page as part of the MSI installation package available for download.

My experience so far
I returned and re bought the surface i5 8gb 256gb. The first one i had would do the hibernate thing every now and then, on battery usually while reading or watching something, it even did it while i was on a chat with microsoft and they were remotely controlling it so they got to see it all happen. I returned and re bought as i was leaving on work and hoped for some stability. The other problem i ran into was after doing a USB reinstall, i installed AVG, and after that the search box on the tool bar would not open apps, once i uninstalled AVG the search bar worked fine. Microsoft remotely controlled and did a re boot and and a system error check and after a clean install i was still getting errors that were not correctable.
The new unit i received on Tuesday (Thursday now here in AUS) so far hasn't hibernated once while using it. I haven't used it that much but a couple of half hour tv shows and some reading in the dark, things that set my last unit off. The only thing i have done differently in setting up was not installing any other AV else than "windows defender". To be clear, in "event viewer" i still see those errors 10016, but no hibernation, soooo far. By no means do i think i wont get it as i don't think iv used it enough to really tell, but so far so good.
It's nice to know that this seems to have been a solution for you and others. I had a decent string of about three days on battery without an unexpected hibernation, but then it happened again, so I'm also giving this a try. I still have until this weekend to do a return/re-purchase, but it sounds like this being a workaround coupled with the posts from the verified Microsoft people are confirmation that this is a software issue and not a hardware issue (meaning an exchange really won't be beneficial besides extending 30 day return window as well as applying some pressure to get this solved ASAP).
I'm happy to see that it appears that there is work being done to come up with an actual patch to fix this, but it's still a bit troublesome to see a post initially refer to a lot of people having the issue then being edited to take away that language...if this is a software issue, in theory anyone who buys the 2017 Surface Pro would be subject to it.

Yes. Just run the command "powercfg /h /type full". It must also be run from an elevated command prompt. This will re-enable the full hibernation capabilities.
