For some reason my new Surface is shutting off randomly. I check the setting and a few other things but it's still randomly turns off without warning. I'm losing some of my school work because of it. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hey Everyone,

As of 7/14, the fix for this issue has completed testing and is now live, please go update your Surface Pro via Windows Update to get the latest download. You can obtain this fix by checking Settings> Update & security > Windows Update

The Surface Pro Update History page has been updated with the details of this release and the update is also available on the Surface Pro Drivers and Firmware page as part of the MSI installation package available for download.

I was also thinking that this issue might be affecting more than "a small group" of users. I'm sure there are some people who have decided to keep their device and silently wait for a fix from MS. When I returned my SP for a new one, the new one still had the hibernation issue. Either I got unlucky twice, or quite a few of the SPs have this problem.

I've also had this problem on my New Surface Pro with M3 processor. It's only on battery power that it happens. I've used it plugged in exclusively the last few days without the issue. For a brand new device it shouldn't have an issue like this out of the box, and it is clearly much more widespread than people are letting on. I bought on 6/17. I had issues with my phone battery after having it for a while where the battery had voltage issues and kept shutting off. I hope the batteries in these devices aren't problematic. Microsoft increased the battery life a lot from the SP4. I wonder at what cost?

It's a shame that it's gotten to a point that I'm scared to use it unplugged for long because I don't want to be annoyed by an unexpected hibernation, but I'm going to run on battery exclusively these next few days and make a determination if I will take it back or not. I have loved nearly everything about the Surface Pro (this is the first I've ever owned) since buying it besides this highly frustrating issue.

This past Wed, since I live close to one, I decided to return the SP to the Microsoft store. BTW-if you order the unit online you can still return it to an MS store.

Well, once I got to the store I spoke with a few of the help support staff and they said they hadn't heard about the issue and after our discussion I decided to go for an exchange instead of returning it.

Since getting the new unit it's had the exact same hibernation problem, twice thus far. This leads me to believe this problem is much more widespread than Microsoft is letting on.

As I now have a brand new 30 day window wherein I can return it I'll hold onto this unit, fingers crossed that MS will issue a fix. If nothing happens in the next few weeks then I may return this one as well.
