For some reason my new Surface is shutting off randomly. I check the setting and a few other things but it's still randomly turns off without warning. I'm losing some of my school work because of it. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hey Everyone,

As of 7/14, the fix for this issue has completed testing and is now live, please go update your Surface Pro via Windows Update to get the latest download. You can obtain this fix by checking Settings> Update & security > Windows Update

The Surface Pro Update History page has been updated with the details of this release and the update is also available on the Surface Pro Drivers and Firmware page as part of the MSI installation package available for download.

Your biggest concern is the biggest concern we all have in this place! :-)

I still have 11 days left, if the problem is not solved in this time frame, I will return my Surface Pro. I like it very much, I like the screen, the 3:2 screen ratio, the keyboard, the performances, but I can't use a machine that while I am modifying a Word document with other people keeps hibernating...

And I cannot keep finding myself in these embarassing situations for another 1-3-6... months waiting for a solution.

I hope that at least we will have a better idea of the extent of the problem: as I already said, it all depends on how many machines have the problem. If it's just a "few", then trying to get a replacement unit could be a final attempt before giving up.

I had this problem this morning on a brand new i7. The unit had just be turned on for the day. I used Chrome to lookup a movie review and then launched its trailer. About 20 seconds into the trailer, the unit shut down. I don't see anything obvious in the event viewer, though it's possible I don't know exactly what to look for.

I pressed the power button and the unit came back to the lock screen. I could hear the trailer playing in the background, however, after I entered my credentials, the lock screen froze and I couldn't do anything with the system except force it to power off and restart.

My biggest concern: do I return this unit now while the returning is easy, possibly getting another unit with the same problem, or do I wait to see if MS can fix it, possibly going beyond the return date? Please advise.

Love the unit, please fix the problem :)

On my SP I already have the KB4022725 update (I don't know if on my machine there has ever been the 716 one since I made my first updates on the 20th of June) but it keeps hibernating.

I have the impression that the problem is becoming worse with time, it tends to hibernate more and more frequently, but that could be just an impression... anyway, today I left it idling two times and both times in less than 30 minutes it went to hibernation (my settings are hibernation after 2 hours both on battery and plugged).

In general I would say, based on my personal experiences and what is reported here, that the problem is "in the PC", no settings change or accessories removal or software configuration seems to make any difference.

To me it often happens running Word 2013, but it also happens with Chrome or even with no program running, while on the desktop screen and idling.

Two minutes ago I was on Chrome, I made ALT-TAB to go to Word on an open file and 2 seconds later, hibernation. I repeated the same steps another 3-4 times, no problem... no way to reproduce the incident...
