For some reason my new Surface is shutting off randomly. I check the setting and a few other things but it's still randomly turns off without warning. I'm losing some of my school work because of it. Is anyone else having this problem?

As of 7/14, the fix for this issue has completed testing and is now live, please go update your Surface Pro via Windows Update to get the latest download. You can obtain this fix by checking Settings> Update & security > Windows Update
The Surface Pro Update History page has been updated with the details of this release and the update is also available on the Surface Pro Drivers and Firmware page as part of the MSI installation package available for download.

Sorry to say, but I don't think "what happens when you close the lid" setting is related...
I changed the setting right after I read some comments in this forum, but still my SP goes hibernating.
Just opened up the same topic in Japanese forum with a desparate hope to draw people's attention...
Update - I changed the "what happens when you close the lid" setting and haven't experience the problem in the last 1.5 days of heavy use, plugged in and not plugged in. It is now set to "do nothing". This makes me think that there's a sensor misfiring (probably a driver - if it was the hardware, you'd see more bizarre behavior) and perceiving a hand motion as a lid close.
Wild speculation - anyone else that is experiencing this wear a smart watch? What if it's picking up something from a smart watch close to the sensor and thinking that is a lid close? Total speculation, but if sleep on lid close is the problem, then it's got to be picking up the signal somewhere.
Last thought, I'm not returning as I do not have concerns about having to replace this with a refurb. I come from the PC world. "new" laptops come off an assembly line and receive a baseline quality check. Refurbs for reputable manufacturers receive a much more thorough check because they are refurbs. Just food for thought.
I think it is related to the Bluetooth driver and/or marvel bluetooth adapter itself. I mostly use the new Surface Pro connected to power but I still get random issues (NOT shut downs) with the Microsoft Arc Touch mouse (not the new one, the previous version) where the centre scroll just stops working. I will see events listed saying the Bluetooth driver has malfunctioned and has been unloaded. I have also been using the SP4 Signature Edition keyboard with the new Pro and that seemed to cause it issues but they seem to have settled down.
Random sleep in tablet mode only happened in the first few days and I put that down to all the app and os updates that were going on in the background. Since then it has happened only two or three times but maybe it isn't happening because (a) I am using plugged in and (b) I rarely select 'tablet mode' even when I use it as a tablet without keyboard and mouse. And I never let it adjust brightness automatically.
However, in the Notification panel my Brightness button has stopped functioning - anyone else have this? Just started today. Clicking that button does nothing instead of cycling through the brightness levels. Will have to reboot and see if that fixes that issue.
I like the new SP enough I think I'm keeping it (have another week to decide) but that is largely because I have the MS Complete and will have two years warranty.
That said it may be something else software update related as well as my Surface Pro 4 (i5, 8GB, 256GB) which has performed absolutely flawlessly for a year has just started to act weirdly in tablet mode. When I wake it after it has been hibernating over night the screen is getting interference type lines in the top inch of the screen. The screen will then adjust the lighting way up, way down, and finally cycle into acceptable visual range. The screen then ends up normal and beautiful like it always was. The only Bluetooth device I am using with it is the SP4 pen. I moved the keyboard and arc touch to the new one until I can get the updated versions down here in Australia.
I wonder if the second problem has to do with the Night Light function which dims the screen... it seems to have started around the time I activated that. Could be coincidence.
I also have this problem when using my Surface Pro 2017. It always seem to involve some movement of my hand or head. Such as reaching to use the touchscreen or tilting of my head. My initial reaction was the "Save me power when my device knows I'm away setting". But disabling that option did not make any difference. My Surface Pro required me to press the power button to start again. So it wasn't just the screen turning off.
One thing I'd like to add that may be useful is that when my Surface is connected to my Surface dock. Which is nearly 50% of my usage, I never get this problem.
