Bit Locker Recovery Key Requested at Boot Time

Hi,

At the weekend our two Surface 2 devices got a firmware update installed. My Surface 2 updated and rebooted fine with no issues.

But my wife's Surface 2 (64GB model) asked for the Bitlocker Recovery key at boot after the update, and now every time it reboots. Although I have the key this is very poor end user experience.

Especially as I am trying to sell her the Surface 2 over an iPad.

Any assistance in this would be most welcome.

Hi,

Microsoft released an update for this today, for Surface 2 devices, as reflected in KB article 2921482.  Please check for Windows updates and install the latest updates.

Here's how to check for updates manually:

Step 1: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings.   (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)

Step 2: Tap or click Change PC settings, tap or click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Windows Update. 

Step 3: Tap or click Check now. 

Step 4: If there are updates available, tap or click View details. 

Step 5: Tap or click to select the ones you want to install, and then tap or click Install.  You may need to restart Surface after the updates have been installed.

    I turned on my surface today and it comes to the blue bitlocker page asking for my recovery key. This had never happened before. I followed the prompts to find my key through my Microsoft account. Where I learn I don't have one. When I try to skip this drive it won't let me continue to the device or refresh the pc. I don't want to reset. What doi do? Why is it asking me for this? Why don't I have a recovery key according to Microsoft? Final question how do I get one do I can use my device? I am beyond irritated right now.

    The need for a hard reboot after the PAGE_FAULT _etc error also happened for me once. I also have the feeling that the problems with Bitlocker occur after an update.

    I made several restarts without any problem after I rebuilt the Surface 2 while keeping user files intact. Funny detail: my Outlook email accounts were wiped out though.

    I suggest that the battery problem must be a hardware issue, or the driver controlling the battery malfunctions. If the battery drains out, I am not surprised you get the Bitlocker problem. When power is restored, perhaps the disk controller handles it as if it was moved to a new PC, and needs the Bitlocker key to access the disk?

    Microsoft: what are your comments about this issue? Can it be that persons who had the Bitlocker problem perhaps have battery problems?

    Like you, I love the machine. It has changed my PC habits, and runs Office – the main reason why I bought it - very fine indeed (perhaps Microsoft now says something after these nice comments from us?)

    Performed the updates that came out today or my Surface 2, received Bitlocker Recovery Key request on restart. 

    After putting in the key received a further error message; "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're collecting some error info, and then we'll restart for you. (0% complete) If you'd like to know more, you can search online later for this error: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"

    Had to perform hard reboot to get the machine moving again as it wouldn't move off of 0% complete.  Seems to work OK now.

    Has happened 5-6 times, at least in the last 2 months, and I'm not sure how to recreate the problem exactly.  Updates seem to be an issue but it happens other times as well. 

    Have had the battery drain to 0 overnight a couple of time for no apparent reason and Bitlocker was needed on restart.  Battery drain also seems to be getting worse as time goes on.  Separate issue, but linked to the Bitlocker nonsense. 

    And don't get me started on the terrible speaker volume and sound quality.  Other than that I love the danged thing.

    Serious PITA issues, all of them.

    Microsoft is killing themselves with this.  We try and trust them and purchase their device FOR WORK, but at the end of the day it keeps asking for some bitlocker code.  On top of that, their site for /recoverykey has been down for 2 days and counting now, so I can't even get my @(#*&@%(* code!  Customer service tells me that i just have to wait.  I can't wait for office to come out for ipad where I can go get a device that just works...
