I am not an IT guy. Did Microsoft release a Surface Pro 2.5?
I returned my Surface Pro 2 (v. 256GB) because of the poor performance after the failed12.10.13 firmware update. I recall the SP2 I returned having a i5 4200U processor.
To my surprise, when I checked the System Properties in the Control Panel on my replacement SP2, the processor was upgraded to a i5 4300U @ 1.9Ghz. - 2.5 Ghz.
Perhaps this is old news. Can anyone explain this change or know of any other improvements? Thank you.

Just opened a 128GB with Lot Number 1349 and it is the new processor. I think that this all depends on the factory that it was made in. Some of them must have gotten the new chip earlier than others. The 1349 Lot might be a hit or miss. But this one was a hit!

Unless Microsoft decides to design a new tablet with the i7 in mind, there is no easy way to get an i7 into the SP2. Thank you for your interesting but useless observation that none of us asked for the i7.
The price tag will probably prevent that. It would be speedier but nobody would be able to afford it.
You can contact Microsoft Customer Service and ask them if it is even in the works. I doubt it though.
The i5, no matter what model version, should be a quite capable enough processor. My personal scratch built desktop flies like a rocket and it is the 4200U. The i3 would also have been a good choice as well.
You have to remember that these are tablets. A XENON version would probably be out of the question and the battery would last about 15 seconds. BUT, it would be a glorious 15 seconds!
I knew about 2 months before the 4300U availability and have been waiting before getting my Pro 2. I will be ordering it next week.
I had been watching this thread for a while and was wondering why everybody was going after tidbit speed increase when the i7 was really what they are after.
A $2,500 or $3,000 tablet would probably not be worth it though.
The "Haswell" series run cool. All three processors (i3, i5, and i7) are LGA 1150 and all three use the same memory.
All three are energy efficient and all three are also installed in laptops. I have the i5 4200U in a desktop right now that I scratch built and I can instantly, remove the processor and put the i7 in it.
You will lose about an hour or hour and a half on your battery if it was in the tablet. The machine will not run hotter.
Intel stopped making the 4200U and are not available and the 4300U was its replacement. It is a fraction faster.
This is not the only thread here on the forum regarding the 4300U but not once has anybody asked about the i7. Not one of you.
Alright, you have convinced me. The Core i7 is faster than the Core i5 and possibly just a bit more of a drain on battery. You're right. So, what should I do to get this wonderful Core i7 into my SP2?

In the choice of the 4300U, there was no choice. It was either that or no processor at all to build the tablets.
Also, you guys need to learn LOT numbers!
