Surface Pro 3 - Windows 10 - WiFi (slow or limited connectivity )

Have a Surface Pro 3 that worked fine till I updated to Win10.  Now the wireless connection seems to randomly go to a "limited connectivity" mode.  Fortunately was purchased from Costco a coupe of weeks ago so it is going back there if we can't get this figured out by Sunday.

The Surface Pro3 is a flagship device - why in the world would you subject your customers to have to resort to looking for help in forums like this?

Everyone,

Build 10586 - the November Windows 10 update - was released yesterday, and it contains a newer Marvell wireless driver 15.68.9032.47 - people are reporting that this greatly improves wireless connectivity. Please download the large update, and if you used the registry hack, reverse it as follows:

Press Windows button. Search for regedit. Open it

  1. Navigate to the following path:

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\mrvlpcie8897

  1. Find the item labeled “TXAMSDU”. Double tap and modify the value from 0 to 1
  2. Restart the machine

Then test your connectivity, and post results.

Fred,

the November Windows 10 update to build 10586 has new wireless drivers. Can you download and install the update (it should be offered via WU) and let us know if this changes your connectivity?

Penny,

These kinds of issues WERE present on 8.1 for months but they mostly all cleared after several driver updates.

And that particular router is not one known to exhibit slow wifi. I'm suggesting you trade it because it is SP new and you can now get one with 10 pre-installed and not have to go through an upgrade AND because you have this issue. Getting it swapped will rule out a hardware issue and would be a step forward.

This is what *I* would do if in this situation.

For what it's worth - Microsoft needs to fix the driver and any underlying Win 10 OS issues. It took them 9 months to get a "good" Windows 8.1 wireless driver. For now, consider an external USB wireless adapter. I carry around a http://www.amazon.com/Edimax-EW-7811UTC-Dual-Band-Connectivity-Exceeding/dp/B00FW6T36Y

I am unable to get any information on where Microsoft is on these wifi issues.

Right now the only thing I can suggest is buying an inexpensive external USB

wifi adapter. I'm not having wifi issues myself at home with my SP3 and Windows

    10 but I am carrying around a

    Hi ail !

I have an i5 8Gb/256Gb Surface Pro 3 bought in France at the end of August 2014. Wi-Fi has had it's issues since launch but as Barb mentioned it, it was finally fixed for me at the beginning of 2015.

However, since the upgrade to Windows 10, Wi-Fi has started to become sluggish. I upgraded through the Media Creation Tool and Executed setup on the unpacked ISO.

Wi-Fi driver is the one finishing by 193 Barb asked to reinstall (which I have done, also tried deleting the wireless adapter and reboot...).

My router is an SFR box Evolution (Neufbox 6) from French ISP SFR and is configured as follow : 802.11B/G/N 2.4GHz.WPA2 PSK with AES key on channel 5 (max theoretical speed 144Mbps) (tried other channels with same results)

My VDSL2 link TCP synch rates are 60Mbps down, 20Mbps up.

    • Under Windows 8.1, I maxed it out on Ethernet (Through Surface Dock)
    • Under Windows 8.1, throughput on Wi-Fi was easily 45/20Mbps.
    • Under Windows 10, I max out on Ethernet (Through the Surface Dock)
    • Under Windows 10, throughput on Wi-Fi varies as follow :
      • On stock settings : 35/15 with dips at 5/2Mbps (5 seconds good, 5 seconds bad approx..)
      • When disabling location service (and losing Cortana), 45/20Mbps steady.

I have also tested with my Lumina 1520 (French) as an Access Point (LTE Plan) I have noticed similar wireless behaviour.

    Additional information :

I have a robust Home server on my network saturating Gigabet Ethernet when I download files from it with my Surface Pro 3 docked.

Bandwidth issues on wireless are exactly the same when I download files from it on wireless.

Ping notes (tested vs the home server with ping -t command other 5 minutes):

    • Ethernet  : ping almost constantly at <1ms with spikes at 10ms once in a while (server busy)
    • Wi-Fi at stock : ping jitters a lot between 5ms and several hundred ms.
    • Wi-Fi with location service disabled : ping almost stable at 5ms average, spikes once in a while at 12ms.

Hope that helps. I'll miss Cortana but Wireless stability is the base (And I have ordered an ASUS EA-AC87 to use as an access point to be finally able to stream from XBOX One a high speed, access photos and docs stored onto the server at high speed, and prepare for Optical Fibre ^^

Note : Wife's Surface RT is still having normal performances over Wi-Fi.

    See ya !
