Surface 2 Speaker/Sound Problems

I just purchased two new Surface 2's and I am noticing a significant reduction in volume from the speakers compared to my old Surface RT.  The speakers also lack any kind of bass.  They are very "tinny" and shallow sounding.  When using headphones, there is plenty of bass sound and the volume level is not an issue.

I am also experienceing a significant amount of sound crackling (from the speakers and attached headphones) when streaming video from Amazon Instant Video using both the desktop and metro versions of IE.  I do not experience this crackling problem with other sound sources like Xbox music, gaming, or other website streaming video (i.e. YouTube).

Since I was experiencing this on two different Surface 2's, it seems unlikely that this is a hardware issue.  This is most likely a software/driver issue.  Is there anything that I can do to resolve this problem, other than wait for a possible software or firmware update?

Thanks.

I mis spoke, what I meant to say is that they aren't trying to fix it right NOW.... and the reason I believe that is because every time I ask customer support for some actual SUPPORT, they just recommend that I replace my tablet a FOURTH time...

Customer support generally doesn't have access to this kind of low-level issue. They are generally only trained to assess 'obvious' problems. In fairness to customer support (not specifically Microsoft, but everywhere), the vast majority of issues are due to user fault or misunderstanding, and their support is geared towards this. It can be frustrating when the more tech-savvy of us encounter this, but we need to understand that customer support people are generally reading from a script, and are usually not at all knowledgeable about the tech they are supporting beyond 'turn it off and back on' type troubleshooting.

I'd like to point out (again) that Surface 2 is *less than three weeks old*. The issues in this thread clearly don't apply to ALL Surface 2s, and most people seem to have only noticed the issue within the last week or so. Let's be reasonable and give Microsoft a chance to fix the problem.

It seems that the issue occurs as a result of one of the post-release firmware updates...which means the problem is probably less than 2 weeks old. That may seem like a long time when your expensive device isn't working correctly, but in terms of fixing a firmware/software bug (which requires liaising with another manufacturer - nVidia), testing it, and rolling it out, that's not much time at all.

If this is not addressed (either fixed, improved, or at least acknowledged) in this week's 'patch Tuesday', then I'd start to worry and/or return my device.

Your 2 cents are spot on... so sad that Microsoft will not attempt to fix these issues. I love the surface but at this point I want some review websites out there to start bad mouthing all these problems with the new surface so that Microsoft will finally listen...

What makes you think Microsoft won't attempt to fix these issues? We've seen from the original Surface RT that Microsoft has a record of putting out very frequent and regular fixes and updates. There is no reason to assume this isn't the case with Surface 2.

This tablet has only been out for <3 weeks. That's barely enough time to recognise, patch, and release a fix for these issues.

I expect we'll get *some* fixes in this week's patch Tuesday.

It would be nice to hear a 'we acknowledge the issues and are working on them', however.

Also, don't take the above moderator's post as being gospel from Microsoft - he was just giving out some generic advice, and probably has no access to more information on Microsoft's hardware and updates.

You can believe what you want but I don't trust them anymore

MVP:  you might be right on the NVIDIA is where the glitch is??? BUT I never bought a NVIDIA product. The Surface2 that I purchased was manufactured by Microsoft! If the problem is with any sub-contractor that they purchase parts of their products then they have the problem with ANY or ALL outside sources that can damage their name! If I buy a car from Any major car maker and say they buy the mufflers from ZYX company and they are defective. I take it back to the dealership it's THEIR responsibility to fix it! Then they go to their sub-contractor ZYX Muffler Mfg to make it right on all new products, to compensate for this muffler being defective or they drop the use of their company in future matters! AND would hold them financially responsible for any and all losses! So even with an outside contractor problem Microsoft has the product! In return they will need to go to the other contractors internally to fix this matter! Probably worked into their business plan is enough room for some minor needed adjustments but this is going beyond that!

Yep exactly. Just SOME official word, good or bad, would be very welcome at this point.

I also agree that we should just ognore the àost from the forum moderator. He was just trying to help out. Just wished he would have read the thread first though 😁
