Surface 2 pro charger issue

I've had my surface for a few months now and, yesterday I left it on the bed while on and charging, due to being in a rush. One hour later I return and the rectangular charging box is untouchably hot but my surface is still able to charge. I unplug it and let it cool down and as I am about to use it again it still charges normally, a few minutes later I remove it and reinsert and it stops charging. I've tried everything on the help page but still no luck. I know current is passing through because when I plug if in the rectangular box gets warm but as soon as I attach the magnetic connector, no luck! I know it's attached because it's snaps as usual.

I can tell you are worried about this situation and it is completely understandable. Please know we will do our best to help and guide you in the right direction.

First, please try to verify if the problem is with the Surface or the adapter. Check from different outlets and locations. Take a look at the charging port and the tip of the adapter, see if there is any debris or corrosion. If you can, try your charger with a different Surface, and a different charger with yours. If you can get your charger to work with a different device, the problem may be with your Surface. If your Surface starts taking a charge from a different charger, your charger may be malfunctioning.

Second, we suggest you try a two button restart (only useable on Pro and Pro2 devices):

Power off the Surface Pro
Hold Volume Up and the Power button for 10 seconds
Release buttons
Wait 5-10 seconds
Power on the Surface

i uninstalled the battery drivers from the device manager, shut down my surface and unplugged it for around 15 minutes. i plugged it back in and left it turned off for about another 15 minutes. i turned it back on and it was fully charged. i was thinking it may have just been some sort of display error, but the machine was shutting down whenever i would unplug it, so i don't know. hopefully that problem is solved.

the touchpad is still sketchy at times, however. :/

If your Surface starts taking a charge from a different charger, your charger may be malfunctioning indeed. Now, if your charger works with a different Surface, the problem may be with your Surface.

Yes, I still have the same issue. All updates installed as of 4/6/14 running 8.1 on my Surface Pro. I've not been able to use it without being plugged in since Dec!!! I've totally reinstalled the whole OS, tried 2 button restart (about 10 times now), left plugged in for a month and unplugged from 30min to a full month (about every possible combination and all those that have been blogged about) hoping for different results. Only thing that seems to change is my % of charge...6%, 12%, 0%, etc, all with the same results....unplug it and it dies immediately. Worked welll for the first several months.

I'm tired of all this.

VERY dissappointed to read 7 pages of post of this topic with few responses and no fixes from MS.

For your info, I had the same issue with my previous surface pro 128GB. Microsoft local support checked it for me and they said there is something wrong (after 3 month of mild use.) They replaced it with a new one and surprisingly, I found the same issue after the first charge and it was exactly around the 75-80% like you. I installed ALL updated and firmwares but it was useless. So, I returned it back to the local store and upgraded to Surface Pro 2. Yes, I paid the price difference but I feel now it is worthy. Pro 2, up to my judgement, is far better than the first generation. It does not heat up, I rarely hear the fan sound (unlike the first generation.) And apparently, I did not face this problem. However, sometimes it shows plugged-in, not charging at 99% but when I restart it it shows fully charged. This might be an indexing error from the Windows itself and it does not happen frequently.
