Surface 2 pro charger issue

I've had my surface for a few months now and, yesterday I left it on the bed while on and charging, due to being  in a rush. One hour later I return and the rectangular charging box is untouchably hot but my surface is still able to charge. I unplug it and let it cool down and as I am about to use it again it still charges normally, a few minutes later I remove it and reinsert and it stops charging. I've tried everything on the help page but still no luck. I know current is passing through because when I plug if in the rectangular box gets warm but as soon as I attach the magnetic connector, no luck! I know it's attached because it's snaps as usual.

Hi FatimaSy,

Thank you for reaching out to the Community! We appreciate you taking the time to consult this issue with us. I’m sorry to hear that your Surface is not charging properly. I can tell you are worried about this situation and it is completely understandable. Please know we will do our best to help and guide you in the right direction.

First, please try to verify if the problem is with the Surface or the adapter.  Check from different outlets and locations. Take a look at the charging port and the tip of the adapter, see if there is any debris or corrosion. If you can, try your charger with a different Surface, and a different charger with yours. If you can get your charger to work with a different device, the problem may be with your Surface. If your Surface starts taking a charge from a different charger, your charger may be malfunctioning.

Second, we suggest you try a two button restart (only useable on Pro and Pro2 devices):

  • Power off the Surface Pro
  • Hold Volume Up and the Power button for 10 seconds
  • Release buttons
  • Wait 5-10 seconds
  • Power on the Surface

Additionally, we also suggest you follow the troubleshooting steps mentioned in the next support article:

•Before you begin

•Solution 1: Remove and reconnect the power supply

•Solution 2: Check the battery charging status

•Solution 3: Restart Surface

•Solution 4: Two-button shutdown (Surface Pro models only)

If the issue persists after trying the steps mentioned above we suggest you contact Technical Support by visiting our Self Service Center here or contact Support **here**.

We hope this information proves useful. Keep us posted!

We are always here to help!

Best Wishes,

i uninstalled the battery drivers from the device manager, shut down my surface and unplugged it for around 15 minutes. i plugged it back in and left it turned off for about another 15 minutes. i turned it back on and it was fully charged. i was thinking it may have just been some sort of display error, but the machine was shutting down whenever i would unplug it, so i don't know. hopefully that problem is solved.

the touchpad is still sketchy at times, however. :/

Hi FatimaSy,

Thanks for your kind and prompt reply!

If your Surface starts taking a charge from a different charger, your charger may be malfunctioning indeed. Now, if your charger works with a different Surface, the problem may be with your Surface.

You might want to try visiting the nearest Microsoft Store in your area, in order to test this. If this is not possible for you, the next step would be visiting our Self Service Center here or contacting Technical Support **here**.

We hope this helps!

Best Wishes,

You only need to ask this question once. You've posted three times. There is no recall for the entire charger and there will not be one.

If your warranty has expired, your best bet is something like

https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Microsoft-Surface-1512-Charger/dp/B00OZLSVN8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467801713&sr=8-1&keywords=surface+pro+2+charger which appears to be the original version of an adapter that will work with your device.

    • Microsoft has stopped manufacturing these power adapters

We received our Surface Pro 2 from our son as a gift just a little over two years ago.  My charger issues for my SP2 started in May 2016.  Power cord was broken and sparked and was recalled by Microsoft and a new one shipped to me.  However, 7 weeks later I could not charge my SP2 again and I suspected it was the cord between the charger and the SP2.

I tried unsuccessfully for several days to get it going because it would heat up significantly but not charge.  No light and no indication that the SP2 recognized it was even plugged in.  Until tonite, I was unable to prove it.  BUT tonite in a darker area, I saw sparks at the thin cord end of the charger and with a magnifying glass, saw it was breaking or already broken.  I could smell something burning so I unplugged and let it cool in a safe place.  This could have been a fire.

Microsoft is very difficult to contact except thru their stores.  They do not have any replacements I was told.  And it appears MS does not support SP2 any more.

It took me awhile to get used to the SP2 since I'm not a techie.  But I've really grown to like it and was very disappointed with this charger issue.  We've made some phone calls and we'll see if MS ever gets back to us.

The replacements on the aftermarket seem questionable.  Any thoughts?
