Surface Book 3 - external keyboard and mouse

I have a SB3 connected to a Surface Dock which has FullHD touch monitor, USB keyboard and mouse connected to it.  I have used this setup without any issues for over 2 years with Surface Laptop 1.

With the SB3 the keyboard and mouse 'stutter' meaning characters are lost or autorepeat due to missing down or up codes.  Mouse motion ceases then resumes.

I have a video of the mouse re I continuously move the mouse in a circle

I have tried plugging the mouse into one of the SB3 USB ports and get the same result.

I know others have seen this problem.  It should be easy to reproduce.  Can someone from Microsoft try this please.

This looks to be a level USB message handling problem. Note that the USB is not unloading.

A fix for this issue is now available through Windows Update. Please review the Surface Book 3 Update History page.

While definitely not a fix, I can confirm that I have been running Folding@Home in the background on my SB3 now for over a week, and the problem has not manifested itself a single time, as long as F@H is running.

Keeping the CPU busy seems to prevent the low power state that appears to cause this fault.

If I close down F@H and let the CPU enter a low power state as it normally would, the problem reliably reoccurs.

So while we wait for MS to even acknowledge this as a problem, I can confirm that running F@H in the background on Low setting is a viable workaround to be able to use your machine as intended.

    Cheers.

It is very soon after the early September update and no documentation.  Perhaps there are a number of fixes for the "no known issues" excluding our issue.

Telling that there has been not one word on this thread from anyone in Microsoft.  That worries me because I suspect it might be a very difficult problem to solve.

    Similar issues to the above.

    My setup is

    SB3 i7 32GB Ram

    Docking station

External 4k monitor using usb c connection

    Surface wireless keyboard

    Surface mouse

Couple of USB drives plugged into base (not dock) for backups etc.

    Problem

    1. Main issue is that screen will just freeze (waiting doesn't fix) so that i can't type, use mouse etc.  This can happen 15-30 times a working day!
    2. Stutter when typing in some applications

    Research

I use Chrome and opening a new window almost always triggers issues.  In outlook opening an email also causes issues on occasion.

Temp workaround and trying to minimise issues.

    1. Pull the power connector out of the base and thus disconnect the dock.  This resets the 4K monitor.  Plug-in connector, wait for 10 secs for 4K to load back up and then spend another 20 seconds rearranging windows and carry on working until next time!
    2. Avoid opening new windows in Chrome (or any new windows for anything else) so using reading panes in outlook and new tabs in chrome.

This really needs to be resolved.  Hope Microsoft can do the right thing and provide fix/information on this.  A quick "we're onto it" would help too.

I'm also encountering this on my new Surface Book 3.

External keyboards (3 different keyboards that I've tested) regularly either momentarily pause input (causing some keystrikes not to register) or get stuck repeating a character.

Occurs regardless of whether the keyboard is plugged into the Surface Dock, a USB hub attached to it, or directly to the SB3.

I've currently got 2 monitors, a webcam, and a USB hub connected to the Surface Dock which then connects to the SB3. As above, the issue occurs even if the keyboard is connected directly to the SB3 so it's not a Dock or USB hub issue per se, i've removed both of them from consideration for testing purposes and the issue persists.

I have applied the latest driver and firmware updates for both the Surface Book 3 and the Surface Dock 2, without any meaningful change.

Haven't yet tried with a Bluetooth keyboard but that's not really the point.

Makes typing emails or documents a real pain the butt, and very disappointing for a brand new and relatively pricey business laptop :/
