Surface Pro X, Issues with Google Maps

I am using:

Device name *******

Processor Microsoft SQ1 @ 3.0 GHz 3.00 GHz

Installed RAM 8.00 GB (7.54 GB usable)

System type 64-bit operating system, ARM-based processor

Pen and touch Pen and touch support with 10 touch points

Recently, after an update, when using Google maps, the names of the locations disappear.

Initially the maps shows all the detail

But few seconds later when everything is loaded, the town names disappear:

I thought this was a Chrome issue, thus cleared the cache etc. but this not fixed the issue.

I then tried different browsers MS Edge and Firefox. They all have the same issue.

I contacted Google and provided the above info, but they believe this is o/s issue and suggested I contact MS.

Is anyone able suggest how I can fixed this problem?

    Thanks a lot, it works! It's the only solution I found on the internet after useless advice from Microsoft, Mozilla and Google...
    It definitely comes from a Windows Update a few days ago.
    I found a user-agent switcher on Firefox Plugins store which did the job.

    Because this problem may be caused by a rendering vulnerability in the new canvas APIs, we can prevent Google Maps from using these problematic APIs by setting the browser's User-Agent to an older version of the mobile browser's. I have a temporary solution to the problem:

    You can download this Chrome extension at "https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/djflhoibgkdhkhhcedjiklpkjnoahfmg" and set the User-Agent of Google Maps to Windows Phone 8. For Firefox, there are similar extensions available.

    I now have full use of Google Maps as of Friday, 5 Jan 2024. On the following Saturday, I went to show my grandson why his Surface Pro might have the same Google Map anomaly as mine. When I powered on my Surface Pro, Google Maps worked just fine and my grandson wanted to know what the issue was. I think MIcrosoft made the update to correct this issue and never explained or gave any details about the Map anomaly.

    It would appear that I'm being "gaslighted" here, however, a MS customer service rep. did record the Map anomaly on my PC so I have proof that the Google Map with disappearing street and location names really occured. It had nothing to do with Google, Firefox, Edge or other browsers.

    The only remaining drawback to the Surface Pro is that it won't provide active current GPS location on the Google Map or Bing Map app. I have LTE added to my Surface Pro and I still can't get Windows/MS/Google Maps to give me active GPS location. MS Roads & Streets from 20 years ago did all that.

    I'll just go with the flow if only I could track where I've been and where I'm going.

    Strangely enough, the problem seems to have fixed itself now. I can see street names again. Maybe there was an update? Anyone else find this?

    Well I'll be, it does indeed work. I don't know what fixed it, though there was the 2024-01 Cumulative Update (i.e. the regular monthly patch) that I found installed and waiting for a reboot this morning. I didn't find out about it being fixed until after rebooting, but that is one possibility I suppose. This doesn't match up with when this started working for some people (i.e. before patch Tuesday), so I doubt this was it.

    Another possibility is an Edge update: 120.0.2210.121 was released on 01/05, and I suspect this is it, as the issue is still in Firefox as of 121.0.1 (latest available on 1/10/2024). This doesn't explain how it would also work in Chrome, unless Microsoft actually submitted the fix to Chromium to get the fix to roll out to all Chromium-browsers including Google Chrome.

    I suppose there is also a chance Google made a change to Maps that fixed it in Chrome and Edge.

    Finally!! it works!

    zoom-in and zoom-out are not as smooth as usual but its not an issue.

    Happy to get maps back again!
