Surface Go uefi version is 1.0.34 and No Bootable Device error

Recently receiving "No Bootable Device" error on Surface go running UEFI 1.0.34.

I've tried all the recovery disk options without success.

Have also noticed a few reddit threads with similar issues with this version in the last week or so

Anyone else seen this and managed to recover their device?

I have lodged multiple support tickets, confirmed there is no way for a user to roll back this firmware update.

I have also lodged a complaint here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/microsoftfeedback

Edit: 11/7 - After 5-6 weeks I've finally been able to send it back and it's been a fee-free replacement. It has been a lot of back and forth and mentioning this thread with so many other instances of it.

Still waiting for someone to lodge this as a firmware issue.....and remove that version of the firmware from Microsoft site.

Statistically, it's impossible for everyone with an eMMC Go to have the same "hardware" failure right after a firmware update.

I can't fathom why Microsoft won't let you roll-back firmware, there's no physical reason you can't.

I think the problem lies with Microsoft having to admit someone screwed up. Once they go that route they'll have to find a way to fix it on their dime.

If they stop putting out 1.0.34.0 they would have to give a reason. i.e. we screwed up.

At this rate they're dragging their feet, perhaps figuring out which is cheaper a recall or lawsuit.

Will they refund anyone who's already paid for repair?

Personally, I think getting the word out is the way to go. Nobody likes negative press.

Just chatted with MS support, they suggested using the "Feedback Hub" app to submit a problem.

    So I posted the following:

May 2022 UEFI firmware 1.0.34.0 causes a "no bootable device" error on eMMC Surface Go 1 computers.

Firmware 1.0.34.0 has forgotten how to boot from eMMC Surface Go 1 4GB 64GB eMMC computers. This is happening to many if not all baseline Surface Go 1's as seen in the Microsoft tech support forums.

The update from Microsoft seems to brick my device, too. I see a lot of people having the same issue:

    1. Surface Go, pay attention to firmware 1.0.34: more than someone is in serious trouble - Real Mi Central
    2. (2) URGENT NOTICE: Surface Go 1 UEFI firmware 1.0.34.0 update is bugged. "No Bootable Device" : Surface (reddit.com)
    3. (2) Surface Go 1 No bootable device error : Surface (reddit.com)
    4. Info - Microsoft firmware 1.0.34.0 for Surface Go 1 4GB 64GB eMMC can brick your Surface. | Tom's Hardware Forum (tomshardware.com)
    5. (2) PSA: Do not take UEFI update 1.0.34 for Surface Go. It bricks your device. Error no bootable device. Reported by lots of users not acknowledged by MS so far. : SurfaceGo (reddit.com)
    6. Surface Go Will Not Boot Into Anything But USB : Surface (reddit.com)
    7. No Bootable Device - **** do I do now? : SurfaceGo (reddit.com)

My 4GB eMMC device has the same problem with firmware 1.0.34.0. Here's what I tried with no avail:

    1. Install Ubuntu along with Windows, failed because the installer needed Bitlocker key (which I don't have)
    2. Recover using recovery USB, failed
    3. Install fresh windows with wiping disk contents. Installation finished, but after reboot issue persists
    4. Install fresh Ubuntu. Installed, but issue persists.

The support response from Microsoft is just... aggravating. No acknowledgement of the problem? No compensation for what they did to people's devices?

I just posted an FYI over on Linus tech tips. Eventually, someone at Microsoft will do something, it is absolutely a screwup by whoever does their firmware.

    Im having the same issue.

Tried using a Windows to Go boot disk to boot an 1803 version of windows 10 and tried installing the Firmware version 1.0.19, but it doesnt overwrite the newer 1.0.34 version.

Microsoft please release an offline method of flashing the EUFI firmware, otherwise I'm sure a classaction law suit will follow.
