Surface Pro Bricked after re-boot

Re-booted my Surface Pro after IE froze up and the system will only make to the following screen:

Security Device Support               [Enabled]

Secure Boot Control                     [Enabled]

Install Default Secure Boot Keys

Delete All Secure Boot Keys

Exit Setup

Version 2.15.1226.  Copyright (C) 2012 American Megatrents, Inc.

I have tried all number of combinations of the following and get the statement.

"Secure Variable Update is locked down!"

When I try to save and go back to the screen above.  No combination of keys can get me by this screen.

I have had this device for less that 24 hours and only installed MSFT Office software on it.

I have tried all the suggestions on boot sequencing with the backspace key, delete key, the F8 key Shift key you name it and nothing...

Please power off the Surface Pro and disconnect the power adapter and any external devices, which includes the touch/type cover. Leave it in this state for about 1.5 hours.

Power it back on. Any difference?

It happened to me. The touch froze on the screen, and I forced reboot it then it always brought that black screen.

The way I fixed it was to press volume down and power button, then release when surface appears on the screen. Then it came back to life.

Hello avt516070,

I have 3 possible solutions that you can complete. If you are unable to resolve your issue after these

steps, I advise you to contact Surface support to set up an exchange for the device.

http://surface.com/support -click to call or click to chat with an agent to set up an exchange

http://myservice.surface.com -Log in to set up an exchange at your own convenience.

Solution 1: Get to a clean slate

1.  Turn off the Surface.

2.  Disconnect Touch Cover or Type Cover, all devices connected to your Surface (such as printers, keyboards, or mice), any external video adapters, and all USB or SD memory cards.

3.  Check the volume button on the side of your Surface to ensure that it is not stuck in either the volume up or volume down position.

  1. Make sure the power supply is attached and the white LED light appears on the tip of the connector.
  2. Press the power button on your Surface.

If your Surface Pro still boots to the UEFI screen, continue to Solution 2.

Solution 2: Wait at UEFI for 5 minutes

1.  Turn off the Surface.

2.  Disconnect any devices connected to your Surface (such as printers, keyboards, or mice), any external video adapters, and all USB or SD memory cards.

  1. Make sure the power supply is attached and the white LED light appears on the tip of the connector.
  2. Press the power button on your Surface.
  3. At UEFI setting menu, wait for 5 minutes.
  4. After 5 minutes, tap or click “Exit Setup”, then tap or click “No” to exit without saving configuration changes.
  5. Surface will restart and should load Windows successfully.

If Surface still only boots to the UEFI settings menu AND there was a red background behind the Surface logo, continue to solution 3.

Solution 3: Install default secure boot keys

1.  At the UEFI settings menu, tap or click “Install Default Secure Boot Keys”.

  1. Tap or click “Yes” to install default secure boot keys.
  2. Tap “Exit Setup”.
  3. Tap or click “Yes” to save configuration and reset.
  4. Surface will restart and should load Windows successfully.

If Surface still only boots to the UEFI settings menu, it needs service. Request service at the Surface Online Service Center.

Amazingly, option 2 worked for me. I just waited at that screen for a while and then restarted, clicking "No" to exit without saving. This after much faffing around and trying to interrupt boot and fiddling with all the menu options there.

Weird. Now I'm paranoid there is something wrong with my old Surface.

Went back the MSFT store today and they had 2 64GB machines left.  Just traded me straight across for the one that was bricked.

I have installed Office 2013, will do the refreshes and hope the brick does not come back.  More to come...

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to us. I’m sorry to hear that you are having difficulties with your devices.

I’m here to help.

First, I would suggest that you try Two-Button Shutdown to see if it helps.

Step1: Swipe in from the right and tap or click Settings, tap or click Power, and then tap or click Shut down to shut down Surface. If you can’t shut down Surface normally, press and hold the Power button (located on top right) for 10 seconds.

Step2: After Surface turns off, press and hold Volume Up (located on the left side) and the Power button at the same time for at least 15 seconds, and then release both.

The screen may flash the Surface logo, but continue holding the buttons down for at least 15 seconds.

Step3: After you release the buttons, wait 10 seconds.

Step4: Press and release the Power button to turn your Surface back on.

Here are more troubleshooting steps for Startup issues.

You can also contact our Support.

Best Regards,

Clare

In every instance so far where this has occurred, a return/swap was the only working solution. The first two options still say enabled even if you disable secure boot control?

I had a similar problem today with my Surface Pro, which is several months old and running Windows 8.1 Preview. I also have Office 2013/365.

I got the black screen after comming out of an extended sleep as follows:

    Security Device Support               [Enabled]

    Secure Boot Control                     [Enabled]

    Install Default Secure Boot Keys

    Delete All Secure Boot Keys

    Exit Setup

After reading other posts I began to panic, thinking OMG my PC has to go back to Microsoft!?? However, I am now back up and running (for now at least). Whether this makes sense or helps anyone else or whether this was a fluke, here's what I did and the sequence I did it in...

    • I had tried exiting setup (last option on screen) and continuing with a Yes when prompted to save and exit. No deal - came back with the black screen above
    • I tried exiting as before and saying No, which just took me directly back to the black screen
    • I powered off by pressing and holding the power button for a few seconds, then powered back on, and got the same black screen (I tried this sequence twice with the same result)
    • I powered off again, pulled off the keyboard and then powered on. This time I got a light-blue screen with a small message and two buttons at top left telling me my PC had experienced a problem (can't remember exact wording) and offering me a choice to see advanced recovery options, which I chose
    • On the next screen I had three options and I simply chose the one to continue to Windows 8.1 (the others offered use of advanced recovery tools and/or refresh/reload of the operating system, again I cannot remember exact wording, but my continue choice was the first one in the list)
    • My PC miraculously came very quickly to the normal lock screen that you get when booting and I was able to log into my account normally.

So there you go, fingers crossed it was just a one-off glich. I guess the key thing that I did was remove the keyboard between powering off and back on. Sounds too simple huh?

If this helps just one more person I'll be happy. Good luck.
