Glad to know I'm not going crazy. I'm experiencing the same phenomenon- and using a different type cover doesn't do anything.
Surface Pro 11 Keyboard Not Responding when Turning off at Night and Turning on the Next Day
I have a Surface Pro 11 where the keyboard will not respond when turning it off at night and turning it back on the next morning. The only way I have found to get it to respond is to unmount and mount keyboard. It will not occur when putting it in sleep mode overnight. It will not occur when turning the tablet off and back on when not sitting overnight. I have checked for updates. I have tried cleaning the contacts.
I have contacted support through the Surface app doing a chat session. I was transferred to 4 different departments. More time was spent transferring me then resolving the concern. Yes, the concern was never resolved. The last transfer was to the business department because although I purchased both the Surface Pro and keyboard online through retail channels support says the keyboard is a business keyboard. I haven't heard back from business support yet. I don't know if they will tell me that since the Surface Pro is retail so they will not be able to help me. Another remedy was to reinstall the recovery software but there would be no guarantee the problem would be resolved. I declined since I spent hours installing all my apps.
I also contacted CoPilot but it had the usual remedies. I do not want to mount and unmount the keyboard every day to use it. The Surface Pro and keyboard is still within the return period.

2024-08-29T16:37:06+00:00 I have noticed the same issue. Surface Pro 11 X Plus and Signature Surface Pro keyboard (no bluetooth, it's the one I bought for my Pro 8 a few years ago).
The problem occurs when the device powers off (shutdown or hibernate or automatic hibernate while sleeping due to maximum battery drain being reached)
After it powers on, the keyboard is not detected.
Don't worry about wearing it out by pulling it off and re-attaching, the whole point of this design is to allow you to do that frequently during the day.
But this does need a firmware or driver update from Microsoft. Could be firmware in the keyboard or a UEFI update or driver in windows or even all three.
This is 100% a bug that they need to fix, don't waste your time reinstaling windows or anything like that. Just use sleep overnight. If Surface history is an indicator there will be an update before Christmas that just says it 'improves stability' and it will start behaving.

2024-07-30T06:18:06+00:00 Hi Miles Wada,
Let me kindly explain that we tested this problem under the same conditions:
Using a Surface Pro, Copilot+ PC with Snapdragon X Elite(12Core) 16GB RAM,512GB SSD.
Also tested is the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard with Slim Pen 2- (Platinum).
The results of the test are that the keyboard can work on the Surface Pro, Copilot+ PC (Surface Pro 11), so the official compatibility information is correct.
Therefore, if your keyboard doesn't currently work properly in UEFI, what you need to do is send it to the Surface support team for inspection and repair.
Or there's another way to test it. If you are near a Microsoft sales store, you can bring your Surface and keyboard cover to the store, tell the clerk you are here, and test with the store's equipment. More test samples will help you determine whether the problem is from the keyboard you are using or from your Surface.
If you notice the problem reoccurring while testing with a new keyboard, or a repaired keyboard, you may want to send your Surface to the Surface support team for inspection as well.
Therefore, the most complete way is to send the Surface together with the keyboard to the Surface technical support team for testing.

2024-07-29T09:54:37+00:00 Hello Miles Wada,
Welcome to Microsoft Community.
I've read everything you've posted here and noticed that even though you've contacted multiple Microsoft support departments, the issue hasn't improved.
Please allow me to give some of my views here.
First, I can share with you some information from the official:
Learn more about Surface Keyboards and Type Covers - Microsoft Support ****
You'll notice that the keyboard you're using is fully compatible with the Surface Pro 11, and the fact that we've tested this in our test devices proves that the official information is accurate.
I believe that you are a customer who loves your device very much and has some testing ability, but let me explain to you that when the support agent recommends that you enter UEFI testing, this step is to confirm whether the keyboard is faulty:
Troubleshoot Surface Type Cover or Keyboard - Microsoft Support****
If the keyboard is not properly recognized and used in UEFI, because it is not entering Windows at this time, it proves that the problem is not from the driver, but most likely from a hardware failure, so the judgment of the support agent is accurate.
So, I think at this point you need to send this keyboard to the Surface support team for inspection and repair. I can direct you to Surface Live support, who can help you create a service order:
- Use your personal Microsoft account (not your organization account) to access the following links:
- Type Surface Keyboard, press Enter, and click "Contact Support" at the bottom:
- Select from the screenshot below and click Confirm:
- You will see contact options for Chat support and Phone support, please contact them during business hours:
I wish you all the best.
