Surface Pro 3 throttling

Surface Pro 3 is throttling CPU while playing games. I have confirmed this while attempting to play diablo 3 which runs fine at first, until the temperature get to a certain degree and fps start to drop. Not the only one experiencing this issue so please fix through a firmware upgrade to bring back "high performance" profile like my surface 1. Thanks

Okay, Microsoft is looking into the problem of the adapter but it is possible that the fix might not come around for weeks and they are not responding to news requests about it so there are no details on what is going on about it.

You can probably look on the WiFi adapter in the Device Manager and see if there is a sleep option that can be shut off.

Now, since you are getting use of the WiFi with the April driver, there is mention of good performance with the June driver as well.  If you don't need to, don't change from what you have.

In Windows Updates, if you see the WiFi adapter in the "Optional Update" section, right-click on it and tell it to "hide the update".  Whenever there will be a fix, it will probably be a firmware update.  Something like that will take time and would include fixes for other issues as well.

Don't do anything with your router.  That tends to be a recommendation and a word of caution on that; if your other computers and devices have no problem, then it is not the router that is the problem.  It will be the tablet.  If you do have to update the firmware on your router, do that with a regular desktop with nothing running in the background.  If that installation glitches, you can take the router and throw it in the trash.

Shutoff Sleep Mode!  If it knocks out Bluetooth and WiFi (same adapter - Marvel), get rid of it.  If you do like me, if I am done with the machine for a while, I just shut if off.  If you need to leave the machine on, run the screensaver and use the "blank" option.  That version uses almost no power.

Oh no, I totally have the WiFi problems as well :-)

WiFi "limited" after wake? - Check!

Network and Bluetooth adapters missing after wake? - Check!

However, this morning I rolled back the Marvell driver to the April one, as several people had mentioned, and it's working better so far.

The WiFi issue is way worse than the throttling one, for sure.  At least there seems to be a workaround, but Microsoft really needs to fix it properly.

I've had a couple of times where it's totally failed to wake, and I had to force reset it with the power and volume buttons.  Also, one time where it turned on in my bag and got hot.  Other than that, power management hasn't been too bad.

You're right, I'm lucky to have such a machine in the first place.  It has its problems, but it's an incredibly impressive piece of technology and physical design.  Jonathan Ive couldn't have come up with chamfered edges any better himself :-)

The rest of the functions regarding CPU is in the BIOS.

I would recommend for right now that if you have a functioning machine and gets on WiFi with no problem along with no issues with Bluetooth, make no changes.  You won't get the performance you want but the key here is that you have a fully functioning machine.

Take a few moments and read the rest of the forum.

You can consider yourself lucky to have a machine that actually works!

I know where the advanced power options are :-)

The problem is, on the Pro 3, most of the advanced options simply aren't there.  All the usual stuff about CPU cooling policy, min and max CPU %, wifi power etc - none of that stuff is there by default.

You can get it all back (well most of it, except min and max CPU%) by enabling Hyper-V under Windows features, but that has the nasty side-effect of disabling connected standby.  Every time you sleep, it's more like a hibernate, and takes several seconds to wake up.  Yuck!!

Please Microsoft, just give us back some control!!

If it seems to improve in performance, probably leave it alone.

The power management is in the Control Panel with a Power category.  When you click on that, there is an "advanced" settings link you can click on with a tree list.
