Surface Pro 3 throttling

If you want to compete with the MBA you don't need to make excuses.  You either put up, or shut up.

People have shown the results of throttling in Ubuntu and it results in the same thing.

Yes, but your Macbook Air has a full blown motherboard with a north bridge/south bridge chipset to control it.  These tablets do not.

The motherboards on the Pro series (to include the previous generation models) are custom built from the ground up for minimum function in order to fit into the case.  Take a look at a picture of the Macbook Air motherboard and look at the motherboard of the Pro 3 (http://www.ifixit.com) and you will see what I am talking about.

You mentioned a 'secondary' sensor before?  There is none in these tablets.  That is with the north bridge chipset which does not exist.

Now, with that said, the 'cap' on the tablets is temporary.  I do believe that Microsoft discovered an issue with them after production began and was too late.  Intel is working on a fix that should be coming around soon and we will see if it will fix the problem and if it does, a firmware update will most likely come across and you will get your speed back.

The "Haswell" series chips turned out to be not what Intel expected.  You may have noticed before with the i5 4200U and later CPUs that a video driver update for Windows came across that would not install.  That happened with Windows 7 also.  I have the i5 and the i7 desktop models and both kick in the fan sooner and longer than they should.  Intel has been trying to patch that problem but the patches do not work.  I am now running Linux on those two desktops which have no video driver installation problem and the core issue maybe with Windows 8 and its new graphics standards.  That is unknown and only a guess.  Intel will not talk about it.  The ball is actually in their court to fix it.

Bottom line, these tablets have the capability "as is" to work at full speed with what they have.  You just have to remove Windows 8 from the picture to get that performance.  Don't believe me?  Boot up a live image of Linux on the tablet and run it.  That fan will not kick in!

..... There is no fix for this issue.  This is a physical limitation for the device.  

We returned quite a few SP3 (close to 100 in total) as we simply couldn't reliably RUN our company software on it due to the excessive heating issues.

I certainly agree it is a design flaw that Microsoft did not really think hard enough about! 

Our company are boycotting the product till Microsoft are able to address some of these woeful design flaws:

* Excessive Heat under LOAD. 

* Substandard Camera that cant even properly capture notes (with their Lumia Cameras at their disposal why the heck didn't anyone think there of using it on the SP3)

* Wifi Issue

* Yellow Banding still seen on lot# 1436

etc..

I'm not asking anyone to boycott the product.  I am saying I want this product to replace my laptop, but it can't if it can't do simple things that take a little bit of gpu/cpu power.

I am posting here so MS and others interested can know the truth not sugar coating.  It has an i7, but the i7 can only do small speed bursts of i7 speed not continuous.  It does have a 5000 intel gpu, but only for short periods.  

I already said I love the design.  It just needs a better design for version 4.  There is no fix for this issue.  This is a physical limitation for the device.  The only fix is placing a fan on the hot spot and then you can get decent FPS in games on low settings.

If Microsoft keeps improving this system I think it will be the obvious winner, but you can't run from the truth it needs a better fan, different heat sink, or a different vent.  

While this isn't as bad as Apple trying to push the iphone 6 that is bendable hahah, but it is still a problem when quality is concerned.

I mean no one wants to buy a sports car that can only go fast for 10 minutes and then turns into a golf cart.

The Surface isn't a tablet it is suppose to be an all in one.  It is a competitor to the Mac Book Air as marketed that way.  I can run Diablo 3 on my 2011 MBA with no issues, or lag on low settings.
