Thank you very much for the reply! Much appreciated. I agree that the camera failure could be coincidental with the upgrade push from Norton. I have since (moments ago) resolved the issue.

    • 1 - I tried a restart - no resolution.
    • 2 - I tried to use the built-in Microsoft diagnostic functions in the device manager, without a restart and followed by a restart - no resolution.
    • 3 - I uninstalled the camera via the device manager and restarted - no resolution.
    • 4 - Via device manager, system devices, I updated each the drivers for each of: Microsoft camera, front camera, and back camera. Each time it said that I had the current driver. Then I did a shutdown (not a restart) followed in 30 seconds by a start. This time the Windows Hello function with the camera face recognition worked. Problem resolved.

    Thanks again.

My surface seems to have developed this camera problem since a recent upgrade install of Norton. Restart does not solve the problem. Disabling and enabling the camera does not solve the problem. Any helpmout there?

I doubt it is problem with Norton.

But assuming it is as you claimed, have you tried uninstalling Norton (at least as an experiment), and see if this resolve/workaround the problem?

Check for Windows Update to see if you have installed all "Optional Features" that might include the camera driver.

If still fails, you can RESET windows.

It does NOT completely solve the problem. The camera will still fail occasionally, but at least a reboot would work around it.
