Surface Book 2 battery drain whilst off

I have had a Surface Book 2 for 9 months now. It drains 5-10% battery whilst switched off every day. I know this is a common complaint, yet why is it an issue on a $4000AUD laptop?

Can I return it for a refund as it does not meet my needs?

If this issue has been going on since the first generation of Surface PCs, in addition to "disappointed", I would add "depressing".

Yes, this is an old issue dated from the 1st gen of Surface PC. My Surface 4 and Surface Book 2 have exactly the same draining issue.

For many years, Microsoft took no action or even explanation towards this dreadful issue, which, surprisingly, no other major brands suffer.

"Disappointed" is all I can say

I have the 15" model of the SB2. My first SB2's base battery stopped charging at all in December 2018 (I bought it in Feb 2018). Microsoft replaced it in store after online tech support was not able to solve the issue. I went a step further and reinstalled the entire device to no avail.

Now, my (refurbished) replacement is having major battery drain issues while being completely shut off. Never mind the fact that the refurbished replacement I got already had 100 cycles on the batteries (that really angered me that Microsoft gave me such a used unit), its currently draining about 15-35% every 24 hours or so while completely shut off. I'm not sure why its so incredibly inconsistent, but then again there inst a single surface device out there that isn't defective in one way or another.

I need my laptop for work and university so showing up to class or work with a full charge, only to turn it on and find the battery level has dropped to 88% after 3 hours of being unplugged is quite infuriating. Plugging in all the time isn't an option in most cases. By the end of a 12 -14 hour day (the laptop isn't used the whole time, usually shut off for about 8 of them), I'm already down to less than 15%.

My battery report file shows massive drops in battery percentage from when it was last used before shutting down to when it was once again powered up. So there is definitely a drain issue while the device is OFF (not asleep).

If anyone has a solution, please let me know. My device is still in warranty so I could get it replaced but I will demand a new unit if possible from the store. Receiving another gimped refurb unit really will be the last straw for me.

I've tried full system re installation with the Windows 10 ISO file complete with the drivers from the surface support site, then using the surface image from the surface support site but nothing helped. I'm about to leave for another trip to and wont be able to replace my device any time soon.

As a user of the original surface book, surface pro (2017), and surface book 2, all of them had their own share of problems that have made my experience with surface devices horrible. Clearly Microsoft products are unreliable and it's no wonder consumer reports gave them flak for it. I gave them another chance after my experience with the former two devices, but it turns out it was just wishful thinking.

I consider myself to be a PC enthusiast, Im no stranger to computing and hardware. I built my own gaming desktop for over $10K that just works. So when I pay $3500 for a device from a large corporation, I expect the best, and nothing but the best (that includes tech support). If I do receive another refurbished unit, I will sell it off. This will be the end of my experiences with surface devices, and windows laptops in general.

That being said, my next laptop will undoubtedly be a Macbook, its about time I gave the other side a chance after 10+ years on windows laptops. Any windows computing needs will be handled by my desktop or through a VM or bootcamp on the mac.

    /end

I have same issue, battery drains while the SP2 completely shutdown with a rate of around 5% per day. I contacted Microsoft and they are aware with this issue, the following is their reply as I received without any changes:

"Yeah, I definitely understand, the reason it drains because even thought the Surface device is shutdown there is a chip that stays active which basically monitor the date and time and basic configuration.  This allows your PC to turn on faster and this is normal behavior."

This is clearly stupid design with no remedies so don't waste your time trying to find solution, either to accept this and keep the device or try to return it. You have all the right to request refund because Microsoft should inform customers about this new genius feature they provide in their surface devices before buying. I will return my devise.

Again, you are correct. I will think this through thoroughly. On one hand I need the device to study; on the other, Microsoft must be punished for this irresponsible behaviour, bordering on dishonesty. I have already requested a substitute for my first Surface (it had a faulty monitor in addition to the battery drain issue), and I'm not sure I would get a refund if I returned the second one, since it is not the original, but a refurbished one.
