There is no GPS on the Surface. It uses location services based on the internet connection.

Simple question, cannot find the answer. A couple of websites states that GPS is there, however I find nothing on www.surface.com. The website that state that GPS is there have said that since june and I don't know how they would know?

As it's a WiFi only device, there is no GPS, but it does have location services as part of the operating system.

Hi,
Surface for Windows RT does not support an external GPS device such as the one you refer to.
Surface for Windows RT can look up your location based on WiFi signals in your vicinity, as long as the Surface is also Internet-connected. Apps such as Maps or Weather, or web sites through Internet Explorer, can use this information.

Hello Myron,
Surface RT does not have GPS, however it does have Location Services which allows certain programs to know your location based on IP address.
Was there a specific app you needed to use with GPS?

2013-01-30T16:08:34+00:00 I agree. This is such an extraordinarily stupid oversight on Microsoft's part they should fire anyone who participated in the decision not to put in GPS and especially 3G.
The Surface is a great device in so many ways, but it cannot compete with the iPad for the high end consumer and business market (which is everything - having the best product drives huge numbers of sales, recommendations, buzz) without 3G & GPS.
My iPad recently broke. I'm HATE Apple and their hobbled products...I hate their company, their litigation, the way they created a closed environment. I love Microsoft and want them to do well. Despite that, I am considering getting an iPad 4 over a Surface because of 3G and GPS.
If Microsoft can't get its biggest fans to buy their products, then it needs to go back to drawing board ASAP. I read in the developer chat that they looked at the sales numbers and found that only 1/3 of iPad sales had 3G, and of those, only 1/2 were activated. So 1/6 only used 3G.
This is such extraordinarily stupid reasoning that the people who made that decision should be fired for the good of the company.
