Where is the product key for win8 on my surface pro.

because of a joke from my friend, I accidently changed the win 8 product key on my surface pro. of course I did not memorized the originl one. where can i find out the key come with my pro. in the box or manual of surface pro

Sorry to hear about the joke your friend played on you. The Surface Pro has an OEM key on it. The only way to restore the key, is to do a Reset.

When the system craps out and we have to install from a USB boot drive, it would be nice to have the key.

you either use the recovery usb drive or the w8 installer picks up the key from the system bios. No user action needed. Same thing when you upgrade to 10. Reinstalling it will not require a key.

After reviewing all these answers, I still see no information on how to find my product key for my surface pro devices. This should be something very simple to get. What happened to putting the key on the device. Seems it should be a sticker under the kickstand.

not really. the key is included in the device itself. in most cases you have no need for it whatsoever. having the key on a sticker is only useful for others to steal your key.

I just gave my Surface Pro a Reset via PC settings using a recovery disk I created earlier. However, it has now left me with an activation issue. It is failing to activate, giving an error code of 0x8007007B. I have tried all solutions I could find online: - Using SLUI 3 to input the full product key (retrieved with Belarc Advisor) - Using SLUI 4 to try and activate by phone - Activate via elevated command prompt with slmgr.vbs \ipk and \ato I'm kinda stuck here... I thought it would just activate like it should and do not have the product key outside of what was preinstalled. So I'm not even sure if the one it's using to try and activate is the correct one... Any thought or tips? At the moment this is **** me off a bit.

This problem seems to have fixed itself.... I installed Windows 8.1 Preview via the ISO, and now after a day or two of playing with 8.1 I did a reset from 8.1 with my 8.0 recovery disk. Now I'm running regular Windows 8.0 again, without activation issues. It is displaying a different product key from the ones it was trying to activate with earlier, so I guess it had issues getting the OEM key from the BIOS or something.

I am sorry to hear you are not able to activate Windows on your Surface Pro. To clarify, when you open PC Settings and see the "Activate Windows" options, is the error message indicated there? It does sound as though you will need a replacement, however, you may want to check out the "I can't activate Windows" page to ensure the troubleshooting steps listed there do not work for you.

Because you recently purchase Surface, you may be able to talk to your local retailer about exchanging the device, or else I recommend contacting Microsoft Answer Desk for Surface.

I am loving my Surface Pro 128 until a few moments ago until it asked to me activate Windows. Windows then refused to activate because it claims that I have installed this copy of Windows on another computer! Before calling Microsoft for support, I though it would be good idea to have the Windows product Key ready, and that's when I've noticed that my Microsoft Tablet does not have a Windows product Key sticker on the hardware or the box. Also, my Surface Pro 128's available space is in the double digit range, no where close to 128GB. I'm starting to wonder if I got a defective or a tampered unit. Should I return it?
