So I've purchased and exchanged 3 brand new surface pro 7s in the last 20 days from best buy because of this issue. Everytime I plugged in the charger, within 5 mins, the backside of the Surface pro 7 starts overheating to an uncomfortable temperature. This was the case for the last 2 Surface Pro 7s as well. Their respective lot number was 1945 and 1943. I'm beginning to wonder if this is an issue with this particular batch ... Is there any answers for this?

I have the exact same problem with my Surface Pro 7 i5. Could you please tell me if 2004 update solve the issue? It seems that we all have one and the same problem with overheating, so probably I have to contact Microsoft... As I can see as well i7 modification have same issue nevermind that is with fan cooling.
First, the update to 2004 takes ~3 hours.
The result with my I7 / 32GB Surface Pro 7:
The fan is still going, probably just a little bit better than before. Interestingly, the Core Temp App shows a core temperature of 42-45°C, which is just like without charger connected. The clock speed is mostly in the area of 1.2 GHz but with regular spikes to 1.7-2.8 GHz for short moments.
So, the upgrade to 2004 doesn't seem to be the solution. Still clueless.
Any more ideas?

Something odd might be up with your windows, might do for a reset. My May update took about 20 minutes i5 8GB

Has anyone of you used the SP7 together with a USB or USB-C docking station?
I tried Dell D6000 and Targus Dock190. While the SP7 is charging via USB-C, the USB connection seems to be impacted by either the high CPU or the charging flow of electricity itself. The symptom is that the docking station all of a sudden, even after a few minutes of being connected behaves like it got unplugged and reconnected, even though the USB-C plug is left untouched. This connection reset is particularly annoying when being in a Skype / Zoom / Teams call and the headset connected via the docking station. Furthermore, a keyboard connected to the USB docking station either does not transmit certain key presses or transmits them dozens or hundreds of times. The latter typically ends up with lines full of one letterrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr (letter) or the worst is when this happens with the backspace key and entire paragraphs are deleted.
The same behavior occurs when connecting the docking station via USB-A and having the surface charger connected. I wonder if anyone else has witnessed this problem with the Surface Pro 7 in this context of high CPU (clock rate) when power connected. A solution would be even better. Thanks
Tested the upgrade from 1909 to 2004 twice on my SP7 with i7/32GB RAM:
1x with fresh install from media creation toolkit USB stick
1x with Surface restore image
Both times it took multiple hours and do not resolve the issues.
