So I've purchased and exchanged 3 brand new surface pro 7s in the last 20 days from best buy because of this issue. Everytime I plugged in the charger, within 5 mins, the backside of the Surface pro 7 starts overheating to an uncomfortable temperature. This was the case for the last 2 Surface Pro 7s as well. Their respective lot number was 1945 and 1943. I'm beginning to wonder if this is an issue with this particular batch ... Is there any answers for this?

Similar issue here. Brand new pro 7 (10th gen i7) here... have charged it 3 times, and its overheated to the point i couldn’t turn it back on until it cooled off twice (both times under 5 minutes after plugging it in).
Currently watching it charge to keep an eye on it just after one of those episodes, and the temperatures seem much more normal, not currently hot to the touch at all.
Very strange.
I use a small fan behind the Surface Pro otherwise when it starts CPU throttling, the machine is useless. Probably MS needs to give a fan when you buy a Surface Pro.
I'm actually experiencing a similar problem, so I just wanted to chime in.
When I plug in my Surface Pro 7 i5 after it has been on battery for hours, it gets SUPER hot and it stays some crazy big number like 2 hours to full charge even from like 30 percent. I can verify there are no especially demanding processes going on, but it just starts getting super hot and charging very slowly.
A few times the charging even froze completely, with it getting so hot, it was using power at the same rate it was losing it so the battery percentage was not increasing at all for almost 30 minutes.
It doesn't ALWAYS do this, but it does this very OFTEN and it's very annoying because sometimes it charges super fast and other times it literally takes hours and hours to achieve a complete charge.
Now, I do find that restarting the device seems to fix things, so I'm almost certain that there is some sort of software glitch that is causing this to occur.
I love this device so much but this overheating charging issue is really annoying.
This is exactly my situation. 45 percent charged, hot as a bastard, 3+ hours left to charge.
My unit got so hot that it shut down. I could not get it to cool down until it had drained the battery. I even put it in the freezer for 15 minutes to no avail.
Mine will freeze and I have to hold the power button until it resets, then let it cool down before restarting it. Haven't done the freezer. I'd be worried about humidity.
