Surface Pro 7 Overheating when charging

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community. We are sorry to hear what happened about what happened to your Surface Pro 7.

As of now, we don't have a known issue on this overheating when charging for the Surface Po 7. May we ask if by the time you unplug the charger from the device, does it then cools down?

The magnesium body of the Surface is designed to absorb heat and cool down quickly which is why you are noticing fast cool down after you stop using the device or charging. With that, your device may become very warm during normal use compared with other older plastic OEM brands with larger fans and more space between the processor. Surface devices complies with the user-accessible surface temperature limits defined by the International Standards for Safety (IEC 60950-1 and IEC 62368). However, if you are local to a Microsoft Store you can visit for a diagnostic checkup and determine if the machine is running at above normal operating temperatures.

You may want to do this steps also on the device:

1. Run Surface Diagnostic Toolkitand check Windows Update

2. Update drivers and firmware

                               Check what is the current OS Build of your Windows version by going to Settings > System > About.

                               Go to Download driver and firmware for Surface, choose Surface Pro 7 then click Download on the next page.

                               Choose the .msi file that matches your current OS Build and click Next.

                               After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

Yes it cools down within minutes when I unplug the charger. May I ask, if you know, what is a normal temperature range during normal use for this device?

I'm actually experiencing a similar problem, so I just wanted to chime in.

When I plug in my Surface Pro 7 i5 after it has been on battery for hours, it gets SUPER hot and it stays some crazy big number like 2 hours to full charge even from like 30 percent. I can verify there are no especially demanding processes going on, but it just starts getting super hot and charging very slowly.

A few times the charging even froze completely, with it getting so hot, it was using power at the same rate it was losing it so the battery percentage was not increasing at all for almost 30 minutes. 

It doesn't ALWAYS do this, but it does this very OFTEN and it's very annoying because sometimes it charges super fast and other times it literally takes hours and hours to achieve a complete charge.

Now, I do find that restarting the device seems to fix things, so I'm almost certain that there is some sort of software glitch that is causing this to occur. 

I love this device so much but this overheating charging issue is really annoying.
