So I've purchased and exchanged 3 brand new surface pro 7s in the last 20 days from best buy because of this issue. Everytime I plugged in the charger, within 5 mins, the backside of the Surface pro 7 starts overheating to an uncomfortable temperature. This was the case for the last 2 Surface Pro 7s as well. Their respective lot number was 1945 and 1943. I'm beginning to wonder if this is an issue with this particular batch ... Is there any answers for this?

Hi EW3_112
Seems like you had a different one.
Not connected to power i never had heat issues.
Purchased my wife a Surface pro 7 i5 128gb model two months ago. Today Sunday 6/7/20 the device was so hot we could not hold it in our hands. She was not charging it at the time nor was she working on it. We have never experienced anything like this before and we have owned the Surface 3 and Surface pro 4 models. I really like the surface brand, but man this is not good for Microsoft. I also had to return my Surface Pro 7 i5 128gb model earlier because it kept shutting down unexpectedly. After I returned that unit I decided to upgrade to the i7 model. So far this model has been working just fine.
It seems like I found a working configuration state for the SP7, but will need to continue testing. So far it is promising.
What I did:
Now the fan is quiet (almost off, can still hear it very little but for sure can live with it - better than with CPU at 90% max processor state), it detects my D6000 docking station, CPU is around 4-15% at 1,3-1,5GHz clock rate and around 40°C for the cores in average. It's still early after the update and for sure requires more testing, but wanted to share these promising news. Will keep you posted.

A good workaround has been to go into power settings and reduce the power setting to 90% under the Processor Power Management setting for both on battery and plugged in
Many thanks, works well.
Now it is constantly around 42°C, 10% is no problem at all in my opinion.
It's a usable workaround. However, my issues with the "USB Device not recognized" when connected to a Dell D6000 docking station remains. Also the fan is not off but runs quietly with some twitches which can be annoying.
